昭和17年10月18日、いろいろなことがありました。まず、スマトラ島北端のサバンにCA Hawkins、CL Capetown、CL Caradoc、CL Ceres、CL De Ruyter、CLAA Van Heemskerckと英蘭あわせて6隻の巡洋艦が艦砲射撃にやってきました。巡洋艦の艦砲射撃なので、Airbase hits 2、Runway hits 8、Port hits 2、Port fuel hits 2、Port supply hits 1と被害は大きくはありませんでした。スマトラ島南部のパレンバン製油所は規模1020、メダン製油所の規模は196あり、合計で一日に1000トンほどのサプライを生産しているので、スマトラ島全体のサプライの状況は良好です。しかし、サバンにはいつも黄色い!がついてしまいます(もしかするとサバンのサプライ要求量を増やせば黄色い!はなくなるのかな?)。今日の艦砲射撃では、黄色い!がついている根拠地でも艦砲射撃でサプライを破壊されてしまうことを学びました。それにしても、メダンには九六陸攻一個飛行隊がいて、またポートブレアにも二式大艇がいてインド洋を哨戒飛行しているのに、艦砲射撃部隊の接近を探知できないのには困ったものです。
一昨日からmoonlightが50%を越えたので夜間爆撃が可能になっています(HRで50%以上の時だけに制限しています)。連合軍は力を貯めているのでしょう、2波14機だけがShweboにやってきてAirbase hits 2、Runway hits 2。対して日本側はチッタゴンに百式重爆(Ki-49-IIa Helen)を4波57機送り込みました。さぞや多数の命中弾を与えることができるだろうと思うと大間違い。Airbase hits 2、Runway hits 9とわずかな戦果でした。こうなってしまう理由の一つは、爆撃の高度が9000フィートと高いことです。9000フィートでも3機がFlakで撃墜されてしまいました。久しぶりの夜間空襲で9000フィートにしてみましたが、やはり12000フィートくらいが妥当のようです。これが昼間だと、9000フィートどころか12000フィートでもFlakで撃墜される機が少なくないのです。印緬国境近くの連合軍側の主な飛行場の砲の数をみると、チッタゴンが756、インパールが582、レドが533門もあります。このすべてが対空砲というわけではないでしょうが、それでも対空砲火が熾烈なことは間違いありません。たとえCAPがいなくても、対空砲火で爆弾の命中率がかなり低くなっているんだろうと思います。
昼の印緬国境では、インパールからShweboへ3波75機のP-40E Warhawkが高度20000フィート(HRでその機種のManeurver値の最高と2番目の高度までに制限しているので、P-40E Warhawkは20000フィートまで)でsweep。ShweboにはCAPをあげてないので、空戦はなし。連合軍がビルマにsweepに来るのはほんとうに久しぶりです。
日本側はMagweとメイクテイラから3波74機の二式戦(Ki-44-IIa Tojo)がインパールをsweepしました。でラシオで二式戦29機地上で破壊されるというエントリーで書いたように、10月9日に二式戦を29機も破壊され、日本側からインドへのsweepも9日ぶりになります。インパールでは30機以上のHurricane IIc TropがCAPしていました。Trackerをみると、Hurricane IIc Tropの損失機数16機(A2Aで12機、Ops loss 4機)に対して二式戦の損失機数11機(A2Aで9機、Ops loss 2機)となっていました。敵地上空へのsweepでこのスコアだと、パイロットの損失数(今日の日本側はKIA 3、WIA 1、MIA 4)はこちらが上回っている可能性も否定できず、勝利とはいいがたい気がします。高高度sweepばかりもなんだかなと思って今日は20000フィートにしたのですが、Hurricane IIc Tropは30000フィートでCAPしていました。明日は、二式戦にも高度30000フィートを設定してsweepさせてみようと思います。
東部ニューギニアではポートモレスビーとブナから毎日のようにマダンに空襲があります。今日は双発30機、四発29機がP-39D Airacobra 20機の護衛で3波に分かれて港湾爆撃にやってきました。7000フィートからの爆撃でPort hits 24、Port supply hits 3の命中がありました。マダンにサプライを積載したTFがしょっちゅう入港しているので、荷下ろしを妨害するために港湾の施設を爆撃しに来ているんだと思います。マニュアル6.3.3.2.4 SHIP AND PORT LOAD ABILITY TABLEによると、マダンのような規模 1の港では12時間に100トンの貨物を降ろすことができます。また、Fast Transport TFは港のないところでも、12時間に100トンの貨物を降ろすことができると書かれています。Fast Transport TFは規模 1の港だと12時間に100トンの貨物を降ろせるのか、それとも100+100で200トンなんでしょうか?もし、ただの100トンなら、いくら港を爆撃で破壊されても荷下ろしの速度の点では困らないってことになります。もちろん、それに付随してサプライを破壊されるので、まったく困らないわけではありませんが。
その後マヌスの南東で、マダンでサプライを降ろしてトラックに戻るFast Transport TFが12機のBeaufighter Icに空襲されました。Beaufighter Icは戦闘爆撃機ですから、高度100フィートからの空襲では機銃掃射と爆撃を併用してくるんですね。PB Hozugawa Maruには250ポンド爆弾が7発(7発も命中するまで浮いているとは驚き)、PB Nikki Maruには6機の機銃と250ポンド爆弾が3発命中して沈没しました。マダンからすぐ北に向かうようにway piontを設定しなかったのがいけなかったかな。2隻ともKiso xPB級で830トン(VP 4)の小さな船ですから、7発の250ポンド爆弾が命中するまでPB Hozugawa Maruが浮いていたのは驚きです。
マラッカ海峡に戻りますが、メダンのすぐ南側でPB Yamabato Maru(VP 10、Tonnage 2780)がSS Trustyに撃沈されました。夜のうちに魚雷が一本命中し、昼になって再度の襲撃でもう一本。さすがに沈没しました。そしてシンガポールの南方、リンガでxAK Nisso Maru (VP 10、Tonnage 4875) にSS O24の魚雷が2本命中して沈没しました。一日に4隻も失いましたが、このほかにも命中魚雷の不発が複数あって、海上交通の前途多難です。
