ベンガル湾海戦、空母一隻の戦果


昭和17年3月4日、ニューヘブリデス諸島のルーガンビルにサプライを揚陸していた船団がアメリカの巡洋艦に襲撃され、PB1隻とxAKL2隻が沈没しました。ツラギからこのルーガンビルにサプライを輸送する船団はずっと連合軍哨戒機に接触された状態で行動せざるを得ないので、こういう事態は避けられません。時期が進むにつれさらに妨害は激しくなるでしょうから、被害を顧みず、いまのうちにサプライを備蓄しておきたいと思います。こういった襲撃に対処するためにしっかりした護衛をつけることも一つの方法ですが、アメリカの空母が出てくる(今回も空母による嫌がらせ攻撃を予想していて、巡洋艦に攻撃されたので驚きました)可能性も考えると、こちらも機動部隊による護衛をつけなければなりません。しかし機動部隊を動かすと燃料の消費がばかにならないんですよね。現在のトラックやツラギの貯油状況からすると、機動部隊をそんな任務で動かしたくはない感じです。一度でもサプライズ迎撃ができれば、連合軍も慎重になるとは思うのですが。
今回の連合軍の襲撃が空母ではなく巡洋艦だったのは、ルーガンビルへの艦砲射撃が主目的だったからでした。CA 2隻とCL 1隻の艦砲射撃TFで、ルーガンビルに配置されていたH8K1 Emilyが1機破壊され、パイロットにWIA 1名、地上部隊に死傷者222名、港に14、飛行場施設に4、滑走路に13の被害が出ました。弾着観測機がいないためか、重大な被害というほどではなく済みました。ルーガンビル周辺の哨戒機の設定は図の通りですが、午前と午後の哨戒はある一日としてはどちらかしか飛べない仕様なので、突然の艦砲射撃や空爆はこれからもあることでしょう。
前々回のエントリーで、mini KBが英軍空母を攻撃して空振りに終わったことを紹介しました。一発も爆弾が命中しなかったこと自体は残念だったのですが、両軍空母の配置をみて、これはやれそうと感じました。というのも、ビルマの沿岸ヘクスにいる英軍空母はmini KBからみると、いわば袋のネズミだと感じたからです。私がそう感じたということは相手もそう感じて逃げ出すに違いない、フルスピードでセイロン島方面に逃げるかなと英軍空母の行動を推測しました。そこで、3月2日・3日はmini KBをベンガル湾中央に移動させてみました。
しかし、3月2日には、mini KB艦載機にも、モールメンからの九七大艇の哨戒網にも、英軍空母は引っかかりませんでした。もしかすると逃げられてしまうかなと焦りました。陸上戦闘機のCAPを受けられる根拠地のヘクスにいるかなと考えて、占領間もないためにまだ飛行場の修理中で、港のダメージは100もあるラングーンに九七大艇を移動させてカルカッタを、またモールメンの司偵にはチッタゴンを偵察させました。するとチッタゴンのヘクスに連合軍TFがいて、空母2隻と報告されました。mini KBはベンガル湾中央からチッタゴンに向かって北上します。
そして今日のメインイベント。チッタゴン南方5ヘクス、距離2ヘクスに発見した英軍機動部隊に向けて、55機のゼロ戦の護衛で56機の九七艦攻が攻撃しました。Fulmar IIとSea Hurricaneに加えて、陸上基地からの Hurricane IIa TropとHurricane IIb TropもCAPに上がっていましたが、ゼロ戦の数が多いので突破。CV Indomitableに魚雷を4本命中させ撃沈しました。フォーラムでは、magazine explosionとammuntion explosionが起きれば沈没間違いなしという定評ですが、今日のコンバットアニメーションでも”magazine explosion”と表示されたので、撃沈間違いなしだと思います。対AI戦、PBEM通じて正規空母を沈めたのはこれが初めてなので、正直うれしい。
しかし、その後がすっきりしません。CA 2隻、CL 2隻、DD 2隻を雷撃しましたが、命中したのはCLAA Van Heemskerckへの一本だけでした。CV IndomitableとCLAA Van Heemskerckの2隻を撃沈できたのだから喜んでしかるべきですが、55機の九七艦攻の雷撃で合計5本しか魚雷が命中しなかったことには、遺憾の意を表したいところ。
雷撃機の雷撃は急降下爆撃機の爆弾で傷ついた艦船に効果的だと言われています。mini KBの軽空母はゼロ戦と九七艦攻しか搭載していないので、フォーラムでのその定説もふまえて、九九艦爆を搭載している飛龍を加えることにしました。しかし今日の攻撃では九九艦爆の姿は一機もみられませんでした。目標までの距離は2ヘクスしかなかったので距離の問題ではなく、不思議に感じて確認してみると、九九艦爆の飛行隊への指示がASWだけになっていたのでした。トラックからシンガポールまで回航する途中は潜水艦以外に脅威がないのでASWの指示にしてあって、mini KBに合流した後に変更したつもりだったのが、し忘れていたようです。雷撃不振の責任の一端は私の無能さにありました。
その後、英軍機動部隊からmini KBへの空襲がありました。17機のAlbacore Iを4機のFulmar IIが護衛して来ましたが、CAPのゼロ戦の方が数が多く、ほとんどを撃墜または撃退。射点につくことができたAlbacore Iはわずかに4機でした。55機の九七艦攻が5本しか魚雷を命中させることができなかったことを考えると、4機のAlbacore Iの雷撃は一本も命中しないんじゃないかとたかをくくってみたいたところ、まずは2機の攻撃でCL 大井に魚雷が一本命中。つぎに残りの2機が CVL 龍驤へ雷撃を敢行し、HIt! but no explosion。不発で命拾いはしましたが、4機で2本も雷撃を成功させたThe Fleet Air Armのパイロットの根性には感心させられました。
RA modでは、昭和17から18年に卒業する日本海軍のパイロット練習生の練度を改善させるため、開戦時の飛行隊からベテランパイロットが大幅に引き抜かれているという設定です。そのためにいくぶんか雷撃成功率が低下しているのでしょう。ただ10%の雷撃成功率は史実的にはいい数字でしょうから、今日の成績には満足しなければいけないのかも知れません。また、英海軍航空隊のパイロットの方はすでに母艦を失っていて死にものぐるいで攻撃したと脳内で補完することにします。幸い、CL 大井の被害はSys 36, Flt 38(19), Eng 1, Fire 0で、なんとか帰り着けそうではありますし。
戦闘終了後ですが、英軍機動部隊にはまだCVLの存在も報告されています。九七艦攻が攻撃しなかったところをみるとこれは怪しいと思います。でも巡洋艦が3隻以上いることは確実で、九九艦爆の設定をしなおして、これらの巡洋艦も沈めたいところ。でも実はmini KBの護衛の巡洋艦が手薄で、連合軍TFが水上砲戦を挑んでくると危うい感じです。このままシンガポールに逃げるべきか、さらなる戦果を狙うべきか迷うところ。今日のターンで、連合軍がmini KBの存在を知っていながらアキャブに輸送船団を送り込んで来ていることが報告されているので、こちらはきっちり沈めておきたいところです。mini KBの南東4ヘクスのところ水上戦闘TF(構成する艦はすべて駆逐艦)がいるので、これをアキャブの方に向かわせました。
