昭和17年3月14日、ハワイのはるか南方沖でI-170がxAK Nabesnaを雷撃しました。Trackerの沈没船リストにはまだ載せられていませんが、コンバットアニメーションのあとに沈没音が聞こえたので撃沈確実だと思います。この撃沈に関連して、Trackerの報告している今日の飛行機の損害の数字が目を惹きます。このターンは双方とも損失機数がとても少ない日だったのですが、例外的にOS2U-3 Kingfisherだけが18機のground lossを記録しています。爆撃でこんなに多数の ground lossの戦果を得たわけではありませんし、今日占領したのはソロモン諸島のdot baseだけなので、占領によるground lossでもありません。だとすると、西海岸からオーストラリア方面へとこのxAK Nabesnaが輸送していた機体だったのかなと想像するわけです。今日はI-26がサンフランシスコはるか西方沖でxAK San Gabrielに魚雷を一本命中させていますが、こちらは沈没音がなかったことと、東向きに航行しているTFのようなので違うでしょう。
18機のOS2U-3 Kingfisherはいずれ対潜哨戒に使われる予定だったと思われるので、訓練済みのパイロットともども葬ることができたことは、日本側の潜水艦の損失を予防するという意味でも、大きな戦果です。と、こう書いて気付いたのですが、飛行隊を船で輸送する時には、所属するパイロットをすべてルーキーに変更し、海没の心配のない到着後にあらためてベテランパイロットを配置するようなテクニックを連合軍側は使ったりするんでしょうか？日本側だと飛行隊を船で輸送する機会が少ないので、考えてみたこともなかったのですが、こういう事件の起こりうることを知ると、連合軍側をもつプレイヤーは当然のようにそうしているのかも。
護衛の艦艇がいれば、雷撃の後にASW戦闘(戦闘にまで至らなくとも探そうとするのは確実)になるはずなので、xAK NabesnaにもxAK San Gabrielにも護衛艦艇はついていなかったと思われます。私自身はほぼすべての商船に護衛をつけるようにしているので、 独行する商船があることが不思議です。緒戦の連合軍側に手頃な対潜護衛艦艇が少ないのは承知していますが、それならたくさんある駆逐艦を使ったっていいんじゃないでしょうか、特に飛行隊を輸送する貨物船なんていうのは、かなり重要だろうと思うし。こう感じるのは、私が貧乏性だからでしょうかね。
今日は、セイロン島の南岸でもI-156がBB Ramilliesに魚雷を一本命中させました。アメリカの潜水艦が日本の空母へ2回雷撃したことがありますが、命中した2本とも不発だったので、このゲームで空母・戦艦という主力艦への潜水艦の雷撃が成功したのはこれが初めてです。チッタゴン、カルカッタ、ビルマ方面への連合軍TFはセイロン島の南岸を通って航海するので、この辺りのヘクスで潜水艦をパトロールさせていましたが、ちょうど担当していた潜水艦が燃料補給のためにペナン島に移動していなくなっていました。しかし、インド西岸のパトロールをしていたI-156がやはり燃料補給のための帰港中にここを通りかかり、たまたまBB Ramilliesを発見したのでした。
今日の沈没艦のリストにはRamilliesの名前が載っていました。しかし、沈没音がきかれたわけでもなく、コロンボ至近のこの位置で戦艦が魚雷一本で沈むことはないと思います。雷撃後、I-156は爆雷攻撃を受けて一発が命中。Sys 21, Flt 43(36), Eng 2という大きなダメージを受けました。なんとかシンガポールまで帰り着いてほしいものです。
BB RamilliesのTFには他にBB RevengeとCA Exeter、それに軽巡4隻と駆逐艦4隻の存在をI-156が報告しています。この構成をみるとTFがどちらに向けて航海していたのかがとても気になります。というのも、R級戦艦は最高速度21ノットと遅く、空母機動部隊の護衛につかうというよりは艦砲射撃向きの戦艦だと思われことと、TFを構成する艦がいかにも艦砲射撃用といった顔ぶれだからです。残念ながらこのTFのその後の行方は不明なのですが、ビルマのラングーンかモールメンの艦砲射撃を行うために出撃したと想定しておくべきでしょうね。ビルマには、ここ数日のうちに2個師団を海上輸送する予定なので、英軍TFの行方をしっかりみきわめて、陸兵に被害のないようにしなければと思います。
昼のフェーズの最後の方で、ルーガンビルがアメリカの重巡に艦砲射撃されました。今回の艦砲射撃も事前に米軍TFの接近を察知できませんでした。重巡は2隻だけだったので、死傷者162名、Airbase hits 2、Airbase supply hits 3、Runway hits 6、Port hits 7、Port supply hits 2と比較的軽い被害でした。チェックしてみると、ルーガンビルには港に11のダメージが残っているだけで、滑走路と飛行場施設のダメージは修理済みでした。また、ルーガンビルに配置されている唯一の飛行隊の二式大艇・パイロットにも損害はありませんでした。ルーガンビルへのAPDや貨物船を使っての輸送が何回も妨害された経験に鑑み、ルーガンビルへの輸送はPB 1隻をFast Transport TFに仕立てて行うことにしていました。1隻ずつのTFを送る方が攻撃を受けても一回あたりの被害が少ないと考えたからです。またPBの中でも14ノットのAnsyu xPB級は一回あたり1000トンのサプライを積載できるので使い出があります。前日までルーガンビルではこのFast Transport TFがサプライを揚陸していて、米軍の哨戒機にも発見されていました。幸い、艦砲射撃の始まる前にツラギへと出航していたので無事でした。その次のFast Transport TFがルーガンビルまで距離6ヘクスまで接近していましたが、このTFも米軍の哨戒機に発見されています。妨害のために米軍TFがもう一ターン居座るという最悪のことも想定して、ナウルへのサプライ輸送に変更して北上させました。
