弱体なブナ駐屯日本軍部隊に対する、連合軍部隊の重圧を少しでも緩和するために、ラバウルの九七重爆による爆撃を開始しました。大したダメージを与えることができるわけではありませんが、これまでは特にトラブルの方もなく過ぎていました。しかし昭和17年5月31日、連合軍はポートモレスビーの戦闘機141機(P-39D Airacobra 72機とP-40E Warhawk 69機)をブナ上空のLRCAP任務に就けていました。
サプライズアタックをねらったのでしょうが、幸い最初にブナ上空に到着したのはsweepを指示してあったA6M3b Zero 15機でした。LRCAPなので全部が会敵に成功するわけではなく、コンバットリポートによると4個飛行隊55機と報告されています。A6M3b Zero 15機のうち撃墜されたのは1機のみで、しかもブナは味方の根拠地ですから、パイロットの死傷は0名でした。それに対してP-39D Airacobraは 12機とP-40E Warhawk 9機の損失が報告されていますから、このsweepは大成功でした。ついでブナ上空にはKi-43-Ic Oscar 21機の護衛でKi-21-IIa Sally 17機が到着。38機が迎撃して、連合軍戦闘機の損失は0機。日本側の損失機は5機のKi-43-Ic Oscarと8機のKi-21-IIa Sallyにものぼり、連合軍地上部隊に与えた損害は後方の1分隊がdisabeldになっただけでした。してやられた感じ。
その後、先日のエントリーで紹介したmini KBがオーストラリア西方沖で残りの商船を2隻撃沈。今日はこの程度で大きな動きはなかったなと思いつつ、ざっとマップを眺めていたところ、思いがけぬところに思いがけぬものを発見し、びっくり。
硫黄島の南東5ヘクスのところに、連合軍のTFがいるのです。2隻のAGを含んだ3隻のTFだと報告されていますが、なんなんでしょうこれは？小笠原は母島にも硫黄島にもまだ部隊を配置していないので、このTFが弱小なものでもLCUを乗せているようだと、あっさり上陸・占領されてしまいかねない大ピンチ。上陸を目的としたものでなく空母TFだったとしても、一暴れされてしまいます。まあ、連合軍側が日本の防衛体制を瀬踏みするために派遣したTFというのが一番ありそうかなと思いますが、まさかクラークフィールドでがんばっている部隊にサプライを輸送しに行く途中なんていうことはないですよね。
そもそもこんな事態を招いたのは、ウエーク島にもマーカス島にも哨戒飛行隊を配置してなかったせいだと反省しています。たまたま、先日就役したばかりのCVL日進(RA modでは水上機母艦ではなく最初から軽空母として登場)と、横須賀での修理がようやく終了したBB比叡(戦艦対空母というエントリーで紹介した通り、昭和17年2月4日にレキシントン、エンタープライズと射ちあって損傷したもの)とをトラックまで回航するTFが近くを通りかかったので発見することができましたが、そうでなければ沖縄くらいまでそのまま航行されていたのかも知れません。
CVL日進には艦艇を攻撃できる飛行機が九七艦攻9機しか搭載されていないので、これだけで料理できるか不安です。とりあえず、Air HQを配置してあるサイパンに九六陸攻を2個飛行隊、また横須賀にも九七大艇を一個飛行隊移動させ、南北どちらからでも雷撃できる体制をとってみました。
