昭和17年2月4日、連合軍はラバウル南方の海域にCL Adelaideを単艦で送り込んできました。ブナからラバウルに向かう輸送船団と戦闘になり、xAKL Higari Maruが撃沈されました。残りの3隻も6インチ砲弾を浴びて護衛のPB Koei Maruには火災も起きましたが、3隻とも遁走。1ヘクス北で追いつかれましたが、CONTACT: Japanese lookouts spot Allied task force at 8,000 yardsと、日本側の見張りが先に見つけたので、ラバウル港に逃げ込むことに成功しました。CL Adelaideはさらにラバウルのヘクスまで追いかけてきて、ラバウル港にdockしていたAPD Akikazeも撃沈しました。ここまでのリプレイをみて、相手の方はしてやったりと思ったことでしょう。
その頃、2月2日ダーウィンで見かけた連合軍巡洋艦がもしかすると東に向かってくるかもしれないので、それを迎え撃つためのCA Kinugasa, Furutaka, Kakoがラバウルに向かっていました。CL AdelaideはこのTFと出くわして戦闘になり、大火災を起こして東方に待避しました。しかし昼になってラバウルの陸攻が雷撃でとどめを刺しました。
襲撃されたブナからラバウルへの船団には2nd Filed Artillery Regimentが載せられていました。2nd Filed Artillery Regimentはポートモレスビーに攻略に参加しました。そのままポートモレスビーにいても使い道がなさそうで、どこかに配置換えをと考えたのですが、 ポートモレスビーで輸送船に乗せるのはちょっと心配です。そこで、陸路オーエンスタンレー山脈を越えてブナに移動して船団に乗り込み、ラバウルに向かったところでした。xAKL Higari Maru沈没時のコンバットリポートには

と報告されていました。xAKL Higari Maruには、75mm T90 Field Gunが12門とSupportが10分隊乗り組んでいましたが、コンバットリポートの数はこれより少なく、また全部がdestroyedではなくて一部がdisabledになっているで、もしかすると他のxAKLに救助されたのかと期待しました。でも確認してみると、他のAKLに乗っている数にはまったく変化がなく、コンバットリポートの死傷者にはFOWが影響していることを再確認できました。
