1月31日にルーガンビルを占領した後、その4ヘクス南にあるEfate島の処遇を考えることになりました。すでに上陸させてある1st JNAF UnitはAV 9しかなく、この飛行場整備部隊だけでは占領は無理だろうし、サプライを消費するだけ無駄だろうと思ってこれまで陸戦は仕掛けていませんでした。Efate島の連合軍は1部隊で、兵員約2000名ですが砲も装甲戦闘車両もほとんどありません。しかも日本のEfate島上陸後、連合軍側からも陸戦を仕掛けてきていないので、相手も歩兵のほとんどいない部隊なんだと思われます。なので奪取はルーガンビルよりはラクだろうと思って、ニューギニア東岸のブナにいたSasebo 2nd SNLFをFast Transport TFで輸送してきました。
そのFast Transport TFが明日には揚陸予定というところまで航海してきていた昭和17年2月2日、ニューカレドニア島ヌーメアの南方沖に、連合軍の空母TFの存在が報告されました。このあたりまで哨戒飛行できるのは、ルーガンビルを奪取して九七大艇の部隊を配備できるようになったおかげです。貴重なAPDからなるFast Transport TFやその後に続くサプライなどの揚陸船団が空母艦載機の被害を受けるのは嫌なので、機動部隊をEfate島のすぐ南側でパトロールさせることにしました。
連合軍空母の妨害はなく、2月3日、Fast Transport TFは無事にEfateに陸戦隊を揚陸しました。 しかし、Efate島の南方でパトロールさせていた機動部隊からはヌーメア在泊TFへの空襲という予定外の行動が敢行されたのでした。機動部隊とヌーメアの距離は6ヘクスで、こういう事態も起こり得るのは確かなのですが、想定の中にはなく、攻撃距離を制限しておくような対策も取っていませんでした。攻撃は、A6M2 Zero 12機とD3A1 Val(九九艦爆) 10機の第一波とA6M2 Zero 34機とD3A1 Val 10機の第二波の2回にわたって行われました。連合軍はヌーメアを南太平洋作戦の拠点とする予定なのでしょう、輸送船が揚陸しているのが見えます。ただし近くに機動部隊がいることは知っていますから、その対策も立ててあって、P39DとP40Eが多数配備されCAPしていました。日本側の攻撃は少数機だったので、多数のCAPに阻まれてA6M2 13機とD3A1 Val 21機の損失をもたらしたのみでした。なんとも後味の悪い一日でした。
機動部隊を構成する空母は、飛龍、蒼龍、翔鶴、瑞鶴の4隻ですが、この攻撃に参加したValはすべて蒼龍飛行隊のものでした。護衛についたゼロ戦も多くは蒼龍の飛行隊のものです。4空母から全力で攻撃すればもう少しましな戦果が得られただろうとも思うのですが、どんなものでしょうか。このゲームではTFに対する攻撃は指揮官に任されている仕様です。蒼龍の柳本柳作艦長のAgg 56は他の3空母の艦長(飛龍の加来止男艦長 Agg 64、翔鶴の城島高次艦長 Agg 64、瑞鶴の横川市平艦長 67)に比較して低いだけに、なぜ蒼龍からだけ攻撃隊が発進したのかが不思議です。
ヌーメアは飛行場の規模が4(5)ですが、すでに多数の連合軍機が配備されていることが判明しました。飛行場爆撃は陸上基地から発進する双発・四発爆撃機でないと充分な効果が得られません。でも、規模1しかないルーガンビルの飛行場から航空撃滅戦をいどむわけにはいきません。また、機動部隊全力での飛行場爆撃も、効果と予想される損害を考えるとしない方が良さそうです。ちょうど機動部隊がヌーメアから6ヘクスという近くにいます。そこで、機動部隊の中からBB比叡と霧島、CA利根と筑摩を分派してヌーメアを艦砲射撃してみることにしました。うまくいけば、揚陸中のxAPやAKを沈めて、飛行場に駐機してあるアメリカ陸軍の戦闘機も何機かは破壊できるのではと思ったのです。どんな結果が出るのか、もしかすると連合軍が艦砲射撃も予想して対策を立てていないなどを心配したりしながら、一晩お相手からのPBEMセーブの返信を待ちました。
そして迎えた昭和17年2月4日のコンバットリプレイですが、予想外の事態が待っていました。艦砲射撃に出かけたTFは途中でxAKL 2隻と出会い、軽く一蹴。ヌーメアの北東隣のヘクスでもxAKL 2隻と出会い、2隻とも撃沈。次くらいにはヌーメアに艦砲射撃するアニメーションが出てくるだろうと思っていたところ、また海戦画面が表示され、空母レキシントン、エンタープライズのTFと水上砲戦をすることになりました。ハルゼーさんは遁走を企図したと表示され、ついで山口次平さんは追撃を試みた、と表示されて砲戦になりました。正規空母対戦艦というのは、このゲームでもなかなか見られないはずの対決です。シャルンホルストに沈められたグローリアスのような場面がみられるのではと、かなり期待して見守ったのですが、レキシントンに命中弾9発、エンタープライズに命中弾1とかなり期待はずれの結果でした。レキシントンは元巡洋戦艦ですから、命中しても装甲帯に命中したりしていたのだどのくらいの被害を与えられたのか、かなり疑問です。それに対して霧島はアメリカの重巡の集中砲火を浴びて18発命中、火災発生。この戦いで霧島はツラギに退避することになり、艦砲射撃TF自体も艦砲射撃を断念してツラギに帰還することになりました。
ところがこれで終わりではなかったのです。帰還の途中に、CVサラトガとヨークタウンからなる別の空母TFに遭遇。前の戦いでかなり弾薬を消費していたのだと思うのですが、今回はサラトガとヨークタウンに1発ずつ命中弾を与え、魚雷で駆逐艦を1隻沈めた程度でした。かわりに比叡が重巡の集中砲火を浴びて5発命中、火災発生です。今回の空母との水上戦闘はかなり残念な結果でした。こちらが戦艦2隻のTFとはいっても、連合軍側も6隻の巡洋艦が空母を護衛していて、数的に劣勢だったことが一つ。また、水上戦闘TFでなくて艦砲射撃TFだったことも悪影響を与えた可能性があるのではと推測しています。
被害の一番大きかった霧島はSys 58, Flt 24(5), Eng 8, Fire 5のダメージでした。巡洋戦艦とはいえ戦艦ですから、重巡の砲撃による被害はSysダメージが主なようです。mission speedなら21ノットが発揮可能です。浸水が増えると嫌なのでcruise speedに設定しましたが、今これを書きながら、一日二日はmission speedで早く北上させた方が良かったかなと後悔しています。あと、最新のベータパッチで、その間にダメージを与えた原因の最後のものが表示されるようになりました。
艦船の沈没には爆弾・砲弾・魚雷・機雷など、複数の原因が関与していることがあります。その艦船の沈没原因とされているのは、その艦船にもっとも多くのダメージを与えた武器なのか、最初にダメージを与えた武器なのか、最後にダメージを与えた武器なのか、それともほかの要因で決定されているのか不明でした。艦船のインフォメーション画面に最後にダメージを与えた武器が表示されるようになったということは、それが沈没原因とされる仕様と考えてよいでしょうね。
戦艦のうちでもっとも働いてくれるであろう高速戦艦4隻のうちの2隻を数ヶ月の修理が必要な状態にされてしまうという、日本側にとってかなり悲惨な戦いでした。しかも場所が場所だけに、翌朝からの航空攻撃もとても心配でした。幸いなことにこの日のリプレイでは連合軍艦載機の攻撃はこれら損傷艦Efate島の部隊にもありませんでした。戦い済んで、2月4日の配置をみてみると、CL阿賀野がBB霧島を護衛しているEscort TFがまだヌーメアから距離4ヘクスしかありません。近くに連合軍の空母TFが少なくとも2つあり、レキシントンは中破くらいはしているでしょうから当面は戦力外としても、残り3隻の空母がありません。こちらの戦艦がダメージを受けていることを知っている連合軍が追撃してくる可能性は充分にあると思うので、これら損傷艦を安全に北方へ逃がすことが目標です。戦艦と巡洋艦を分派した後に北上させていた機動部隊を少し南に下げて、連合軍の機動部隊が近寄ってきたら戦艦を犠牲に、空母を仕留めたいところです。
実は、今回の艦砲射撃TFに続いて、ヌーメアを艦砲射撃するための別のTFをすでにツラギから出撃させていました。今回は艦砲射撃を実行できなかったので、次はぜひ決めたいところですが、連合軍空母の動きによっては中止せざるを得ないかもしれません。それにしても、ルーガンビルへの連合軍部隊の上陸から始まって、次々とこの方面に戦力を逐次投入せざるを得ない状況になりつつあります。史実の海兵師団ガダルカナル上陸からのソロモンキャンペーンも、日本側としてはきっとこんな感じに、ずるずると戦力を投入して続いてしまったんでしょうね。このエスピリッツサント・ニューヘブリデスキャンペーンは、史実のソロモンキャンペーンと違い、南方資源地帯がまだ確保できていないという点でさらに問題が大きいかもしれません。
