昭和17年1月16日は潜水艦が大活躍でした。夜、スマトラ島から逃げてきたと思われるコンボイをセイロン島の南でI-158が捕捉し、Tasman/India級xAP Rajula(tonnage 4980, VP 12)に雷撃して魚雷を一本命中させました。コンボイはコロンボに向けて北西に進路をとっていたのだと思うのですが、続いてその西北のヘクスでI-121がxAP Rohnaを雷撃して魚雷一本命中させました。この夜の襲撃では沈没音はありませんでした。xAP Rajulaは雷撃のダメージでコンボイから遅れていたのだと思うのですが、夜の攻撃と同じヘクスで昼になってからもう一度I-158が雷撃して沈めました。

そして出入りの頻繁なフィジーのSuva南西のヘクスでI-10がIsthmian Cargo級xAK Steel Ranger(tonnage 4620, VP 9)を雷撃して撃沈。また東太平洋の真珠湾・サンフランシスコ航路上と思われるヘクスで、I-26がTransmarine Cargo級xAK Alaskan(tonnage 3050, VP 6)を雷撃して撃沈しました。港の周辺での襲撃成功も見ていて楽しいのですが、こういう周囲に陸地の見えない大海原でコンボイを捕捉・撃沈する方が、相手の航路をヨミあてたっていう感じでうれしさも格別です。この日のコンバットアニメーションでは、連合軍の潜水艦はASW TFに爆雷攻撃されるばかりで、日本の潜水艦の雷撃成功(ハワイ沖でI-169がAG Regulusを雷撃したのだけはずれ)が続き見ていて気分がいい日でした。
機動部隊はオーストラリア西岸沖にいます。Derbyに停泊していたCL Enterpriseを2波にわたって攻撃しました。2波合計で32機の九七艦攻と40機の九九艦爆が攻撃したのですが、命中したのは250kg爆弾一発と魚雷一本のみでした。軽巡以下の小艦艇にはなかなか爆弾も魚雷もあたらないってことでしょうか？残念な結果です。この日は、その後の戦闘中でない時に2回沈没音が聞かれました。Trackerの沈没艦船情報にはE class 2nd Groups級CL Enterprise(tonnage 7580, VP 30)が載せられています。航空攻撃の戦果はしょぼいものでしたが、軽巡に魚雷一本はかなりのダメージなはずなので、沈んでくれたのかもしれません。その他、今日はマレー周辺でも小艦船に航空攻撃が実施されました。即撃沈だったのHDMLだけなのに、陸攻6機・重爆3機と大きな被害が出てしまいました。この時期の陸攻パイロットは優秀なので、たとえ1機喪失でも小さな被害とはいえないと思うのです。
偵察情報(クーパンから司偵では届かないので九六陸攻で偵察)ではPort HradlandにもCAがいるそうなので、機動部隊はもう少し西南までパトロールさせたいと思います。このPort HeadlandやDerbyに巡洋艦を停泊させているのはなぜなんでしょう。ダーウィンをしつこく艦砲射撃しているので、オーストラリア西岸への上陸作戦を警戒しているのでしょうか。それにしても、Port HeadlandやDerby上空を日本の偵察機が飛んで、艦船がいることを報告したのは今日が始めてではありませんから、私なら機動部隊の接近を予測してパースの方に退避させておきますけどね。今日のコンバットアニメーションを見る限り、傷ついていて動けずに停泊しているっていうわけでもないようだし。
ミンダナオ島のMalaybalayで地上戦がありました。ミンダナオ島は西端のZamboangaを除いて占領し、あとはここMalaybalayに立てこもる米軍部隊を残すのみとなりました。ここのヘクスは地形が山地で前回のPBEMでも掃蕩に時間がかかりました。なので今回はぜいたくにも一個師団を投入して、第4師団+木村支隊で攻撃させたのですが、陥落はなりませんでした。数日休養させてから再度攻撃させることにします。この攻撃結果をみながら感じていることは、ミンダナオ島のような急ぐ必要のないところに第4師団を投入したのは贅沢すぎるなということです。どうせ時間をかけるなら兵糧攻めでいいわけで、もっと小部隊に担当させるべきでした。パレンバンが要塞化されるのを予測できていたら、本当は第4師団もパレンバン上陸を担当させたのにと後悔しています。
