昭和17年7月25日、ビルマのMagweに夜間爆撃がありました。第一波は3機のLB-30 Liberator、第2波は6機のB-17E Fortressです。Magweはビルマ中部でいちばん大きな規模7の飛行場があるので、屠龍(Ki-45 KAIa Nick)が夜間のCAPをしていました。レーダーも複数設置してありますが、探知はそれぞれ9分前と6分前で、ほとんどスクランブルの余裕がありません。昨夜はSevere stormsだったので、レーダーがなければ爆弾が落ち始めるまで気付かなかったかも知れませんから、まあ役立っているんでしょうね。対空中の機が珍しくLB-30 Liberatorを1機撃墜してくれました。しかし、屠龍の方も合計で3機撃墜され、パイロットも一人がKIA、一人がWIAとなってしまいました。少数機の爆撃でCAPに邪魔されたこともあって地上に被害がなかったことが不幸中の幸いです。
昼のフェーズではポートモレスビーからショートランドに14機のB-24D Liberatorがやってきました。来襲10分前にレーダーが探知して、隣りのヘクスのルンガでCAPをしていたゼロ戦(A6M2 Zero)4機が迎撃に向かいました。ゼロ戦1機が撃墜され、B-24D Liberatorは被撃墜機0。ゆうゆうと高度7000フィートから爆撃し、港にdisbandしていたxAK Kotobuki Maru #5に500ポンド爆弾が一発命中してしまいました。とにかく、CAPがいてもこんな感じで、ほんとに四発爆撃機には苦労しています。おかえしに、日本側はきのうに引き続いて重慶の飛行場を爆撃。TrackerでみるとC-47 Skytrainを7機、B-25C Mitchellを3機など地上で破壊したようです。
昨日のエントリーにも書いたように、連合軍の中国へのサプライの空輸はとても重要な作戦です。そこで、これに利用できる輸送機をチェックしてみると、図のように11機種ありました(昭和17年中に配備される輸送機はもう2機種ありますが、その2つはソ連の輸送機なので除外)。その11機種の中でも一番重要なのはC-47 Skytrainでしょう。なぜかというと、Replace Rate(一ヶ月の生産配備数)が36とダントツに多いからです。それに次ぐのがC-47の海軍バージョンであるR4D-1 Skytrainの月産7機です。今日は7月25日ですから、昭和17年5月1日に生産開始のC-47 Skytrainはこれまでにおおよそ103機ほど生産配備されたものと思われます。これとはべつに、増援されて登場する輸送機飛行隊の装備しているC-47 Skytrainが数十機あるでしょう。それに対して、TrackerによるとC-47 Skytrainの今日までの損失機数合計は85機でしたから、昨日と今日の爆撃はそれなりの戦果をあげることができたかなと感じます。
ニューギニア島南岸にある根拠地Merauke。以前は建設部隊を配備して陣地の構築を行っていましたが、トレス海峡の島Horn Islandが陥落してしまうと保持する意味に乏しいのと、連合軍がその気になれば簡単に落とされてしまいます。なので、配備していた部隊は、北岸のホーランディアに配備してあった輸送機で撤収させ、現在のMeraukeは部隊の配備されていない根拠地となっています。このMeraukeにこのところ頻繁に連合軍の偵察機が訪れています。昨日その報告を読みながらあらてめて気付いたのですが、部隊の配備されていない根拠地でもきちんと連合軍機の目撃報告を送ってくれる仕様なんですね。ということは、きっと部隊の配備されていない根拠地のヘクスに連合軍のTFや地上部隊が出現した時もやはり報告があるのでしょう。
