先日のエントリーで、SIGINTに同一の連合軍TFを示すと思われるHeavy Volume of Radio transmissionsが4日間で3回も検出されたことをお報せしました。その後、7月15日にも西航する同TFからと思われる Heavy Volume of Radio transmissionsが聴取されました。SIGINT情報では位置しか判明せず、またルーガンビルからの二式大艇の哨戒網にも引っかからなかったので、TFの構成は不明でしたが、いちかばちかということでトラックから水上戦闘TFを迎撃に差し向けました。ソロモン諸島の東側を経由してオーストラリア東方に向けて航海しましたが、さいわい7月17日までは連合軍の哨戒機に出会うことがなく、しめしめと思っていました。
ところが昭和17年7月18日午後のフェーズでDD照月のレーダーが敵機を探知し、その14分後、99機のワイルドキャットに護衛された84機のSBD-3 Dauntlessがやってきました。空母はいないのでCAPはなく、そのまま急降下爆撃を敢行。高度2000~4000フィートに降下しての爆撃ですが、日本側の対空砲の性能は貧弱で撃墜できたのは一機だけ。1000ポンド爆弾が2発命中したCA愛宕は沈没し、BB金剛・CA鳥海・DD狭霧は大破となってしまいました。その後、15機のTBD-1 Devastatorの高度140000フィートからの爆撃がありましたが、さいわい爆弾は一発も命中しませんでした。距離5ヘクスですが、TBD-1 Devastatorは距離5ヘクスだと雷撃はできないんでしたっけね。
今日のリプレイ終了後の両軍のTFの位置も、図に示した位置と同じでした。大破したBB金剛・CA鳥海・DD狭霧はDD天霧の護衛でEscort TFに編成されていました。金剛は戦艦なので1000爆弾5発明中でもSys 43, Flt 11, Eng 28、鳥海は1000ポンド爆弾4発でSys 51, Flt 23, Eng 21とかなりの重態ですが、2隻とも19ノット出せる状態です。逃げることができるでしょうか？距離5ヘクスに強力な連合軍水上戦闘TFがいるので、これに追撃されれば一巻の終わりのような感じもします。ともあれ、情報のはっきりしない状態での今回のようなギャンブル的な行動は避けるべきというのが教訓です。それにしても高くついた教訓でした。今後は絶対国防圏の構築に勤しみ、火遊びは慎もうと思います。
SIGINTで報告されていたTFは明日かあさってに、いまの連合軍空母TFのいる位置あたりに達するものと予想していました。今回攻撃して来た空母TFと残り二つの水上戦闘TFは3つとも西に向かって航行しているので、これがSIGINTのHeavy Volume of Radio transmissionsの発信源だったのか、それとももう一つ東側に続航するコンボイがいるのかどうかは不明です。日本側のTFの東隣に連合軍TFがいるのですが、これの構成は不明です。空母より北側(北よりの航路の方がすこし危険度が高い)を航行しているので、これはコンボイではないんでしょうね。
