きのう挙動不審をお伝えしていた艦砲射撃TFですが、再度のダーウィン砲撃は実施せず、砲弾を残したまま帰途につきました。そして、昭和17年4月4日、陸戦でようやくダーウィンを陥落させることができました。ダーウィンを奪取したのは初めてなので、他の要地の奪取と同様に東京ローズの放送が流れるだということを初めて知りました。攻撃に参加させた第38師団は73/96に、きのう上陸したばかりで戦闘には初参加の11th Garrison Unitも59/79と大きく戦力を減らしました。勝利の後なので、disruptionは14と15、fatigueは15と10でそれほどではありませんがしばらく戦力回復のために休養が必要です。
フォーラムでは、ダーウィンは日本が自前で作る捕虜収容所になる、つまりダーウィンに上陸した部隊は他に転進できないままここで過ごすことになってしまうという認識が示されています。一個師団を遊ばせるのはもったいないし、この一個師団を維持するために輸送船を手配するのも大変ですし、対潜護衛の兵力を常時ここにさかなければならなくなるのも困ったものです。
昨日ダーウィン東方にみかけた連合軍TFは潜水艦だったようです。4月4日には連合軍潜水艦を相手にダーウィン周辺では2回の対潜戦闘があり、幸い被害はありませんでした。他方、六艦隊は地味ながらそれなりに仕事をしてくれています。昨日はオーストラリア西岸でRO-63がxAK Admiral Wileyを撃沈し、今日はセイロン島の南岸でI-158がTK Athelmonarchを撃沈しました。まあ、日本側が連日こういう船舶喪失を被る日も遠くないでしょうし、ダーウィンは遠いし。
11th Garrison Unitは590日後にwithdrawの予定ですからこのままダーウィンに駐屯させますが、第38師団の方は可能なら転進させたいもの。でも、ダーウィンで敗退した連合軍部隊の中には第2オーストラリア師団が含まれていましたし、ダーウィンの南方4ヘクスのKatherineには1万6500名の連合軍が駐屯しています。奪取したからには昭和18年半ばまでは保持したいので、どうすべきか悩むところです。
