小規模な空襲はお互いに続けていますが、このところ大規模な戦闘はなく小康状態です。インド・ビルマ戦線で、増槽を付けた二式戦(航続距離8ヘクス)がsweepできる範囲内の飛行場から連合軍が飛行機をすべて引き上げてしまったことが一つの原因です。それと、連合軍が大規模な上陸作戦を企んでいると、しばらく静かな状態になるので、今回もそうなのだろうとにらんでます。
昭和17年9月7日、大規模な上陸作戦というわけではありませんが、8月27日に空挺部隊で占領したニューギニア南岸のMeraukeに連合軍の船団が発見されました。ひとつは空母を含んだTFで、もうひとつは貨物船のコンボイのようです。航行中という表示がありませんから、このMeraukeで部隊を上陸させているのでしょう。Meraukeから距離8ヘクスの、ニューギニア北岸のホーランディアには日本側の飛行場があるので、エアカバーを提供するために護衛空母が来ているのだと思います。
このMeraukeが占領された時、アラフラ海経由で西に連合軍が押し出してくることが心配になりました。そこで、ホーランディアにいたAir HQはアンボンに移動させました。移動させなければホーランディアからゼロ戦の護衛付きで陸攻をこのTFの攻撃に向かわせることができたはずで、判断がまずかったかな。Meraukeは飛行場のSPSが５なので、無理すれば8まで拡張できます。四発爆撃機でホーランディやダーウィンを制圧し、蘭印にむかうつもりでしょうかね。
