昭和17年1月6日、Horn Islandにサプライを陸揚げ中のコンボイがCA Exeterに襲われて、PB2隻とxAK 3隻が沈没の大被害を受けました。何となく、こういう水上艦による襲撃がありそうな予感がしていたので、占領翌日の1月3日はこのコンボイを退避させました。でも1月3日は何もなく過ぎたので、戻ってきてサプライを揚陸させていました。中3日あけての襲撃とは連合軍もいろいろと頭をつかってきます。
お返しにというわけではないのですが、この晩は金剛と榛名をふくめた水上艦部隊がダーウィンを艦砲射撃しました。先日、B-17がダーウィンからアンボンの飛行場を爆撃に来ました。ダーウィンに連合軍の4発爆撃機がいると、クーパンもディリもアンボンも飛行場と港が安全とは言えません。また、クーパンとディリの飛行場はまだ修理中で、ダーウィン爆撃ができません。なので、艦砲射撃で叩くことにしました。ここにはCD gunがありますが、rangeが16なので艦砲射撃TFのrangeを18しました。CA Cornwallが港に停泊していたようで、一発命中。戦艦2隻くらいだと大した被害を与えることができないので、もう一つ艦砲射撃TFを送り込む予定です。あと、今日はセレベス島のケンダリーを占領しました。
シンガポールへ進撃中の陸軍部隊と並行して、ジョホールバルの隼はパレンバンへのsweepを実施しました。今日は4対1のスコアでした。そして、やはりジョホールバル配置の陸攻隊がスマトラ島西岸にあるBenkoelenと同島南端の港町Oosthavenにいる艦船に雷撃を実施しました。CL Ceres、AP Leonard Wood、xAP Khedive Ismail、xAK Elysiaの4隻にそれぞれ魚雷が一本ずつ命中しました。このうちHarris級AP Leonard Wood(tonnage 10040, VP 20)は沈没したと報告されています。この船は昭和18年になるとAPAに改装が可能な船なので、ホントに沈没したのなら素晴らしい戦果です。
12月末頃から連合軍がスマトラ島南部の港に多数の艦船を停泊させているのが観察されていました。これらの艦船を攻撃できる範囲内の飛行場としてはボルネオ島西南端のシンカワンをすでに占領しています。しかしここは飛行場の規模が3(4に向けて拡張中)なことと、Air HQなどのaviation support部隊やサプライを安全に輸送する自信がないこと、B-17の爆撃が心配なことから、陸攻隊を進出させませんでした。 その点、ジョホールバルはたとえ連合軍の爆撃を受けて一時的にMaint’d/Damagedの機体が多くなっても鉄道で後送できるから安心です。ようやくジョホールバルを占領した成果が現れた今日の攻撃でした。
でも、連合軍はなんのためにスマトラ南部に艦船を停泊させているのか。実はスマトラ島北部から連合軍部隊が退去して行っています。北部スマトラでOilの産出されるMedanも無人になっていたので、1月3日に空挺作戦で占領しました。それに対して南部スマトラでは、パレンバンの兵員数こそ14920名ですが、Benkoelenに10810名、Oosthavenに24420名もいます。これは以前のエントリーで紹介したFortress Palembangが目的でしょう。その証拠に、撃沈と報告されたAP Leonard Woodは開戦時にはケープタウンにいて、18th British Division(偵察大隊と2個歩兵旅団)をシンガポールに輸送するコンボイに所属していました。シンガポールに輸送しても全滅するだけなのでパレンバン防衛のためにスマトラ島に揚陸させたのだと思います。フォーラムのスレでは、Fortress Palembangなんて怖くないという意見が多かったのですが、私としては相手をするのがとても嫌な作戦で、正直困ったなと感じています。
ダーウィンになんか艦砲射撃をしに行くくらいなら、それらの戦艦をスマトラ島西岸に送ればいいとお思いかも知れません。できればそうしたいところです。でも、スマトラ島の西岸に行くには、ジャワ島との間のスンダ海峡を通ることは避けなければなりません。日本の潜水艦のインド洋進出を妨害するために、ジャワ島西端のMerakにはたくさんの機雷が敷設されているはずですから。またバリ海峡(ジャワ島とバリ島の間)も同じ意味で危険で、ロンボク海峡(バリ島の東側)以東の海峡を通過してゆくことになると思います。かなり距離が遠いので戦闘で損傷した艦を帰還時に失う可能性が高くなりますし、Fortress Palembangをするくらいですから連合軍の空母が出てくる可能性も低くはないと思われます。それに加えて、日本側はこの地域でそもそも燃料が不足しているのです。蘭印の各所に上陸する船団を護衛するために、Mini KBや戦艦を含んだ水上艦隊を開戦時から動かし続けていますから、すでにパラオの燃料備蓄はゼロです。いま燃料を積載したタンカーと改装工事の済んだLima級AKEをパラオとアンボンに向かわせている途中です。でも、水上艦の襲撃は間に合わないでしょうね、きっと。潜水艦はインド洋に3隻いるので、何隻かは沈めて欲しいところです。
