昨日のエントリーでお示ししたように、4月は平穏な日が多く、特にオーストラリア北東部ではほとんど戦闘らしい戦闘がありませんでした。昭和17年5月3日、ポートモレスビーのA6M3bにクックタウンをsweepさせてみました。A6M3bはarmor 1が特長の陸上基地型ゼロ戦で、RA modの仮想機種です。P-40EがCAPに上がっていたのですが、多数を撃墜する成果を挙げることができました。これが刺戟になったのでしょう、5月4日は珊瑚海をはさんで連合軍にも動きがありました。
前日のクックタウンsweepに味をしめて、今日はブナの九七重爆でクックタウンを爆撃させることにしていました。ブナから26機のA6M3bが護衛で出かけたのですが、前日以上に多数のCAP、合計で76機が待ちかまえていました。曇天のためか視認から来襲まで0分と報告されていて、実際に76機が迎撃できたわけではなく、空中に待機していた30機プラスいくらかなんだと思います。それでも護衛機よりCAPの数が多いし、護衛戦闘機よりCAPの方が有利な仕様ですから、26機のA6M3bのうち17機が空戦で破壊、5機がおしゃかになったと報告されています。パイロットにもKIA 7名、WIA 1名、WIA 8名と多数の犠牲者が出てしまいました。戦果は地上で一機破壊とAirbase hits 3、Airbase supply hits 1、Runway hits 8で連合軍のポートモレスビー爆撃と同じくらいでした。先月1ヶ月の全戦線でのゼロ戦の損失は9機(すべてA6M2)だけだったので、今日一日でその2倍半を失ったことになり、中の人にも大きなショックで、考えが甘かったと反省中です。一方、九七重爆の方には損失が一機もなく、護衛戦闘機隊は自らを犠牲にして爆撃機を守ってくれたわけですね。
珊瑚海での大きな損害を埋め合わせるかのように、潜水艦が気を吐いた一日で、西海岸・ハワイ航路ではI-26がxAK Texanを、オーストラリア西北のパースの沖でI-155がxAK Haresfieldを撃沈してくれました。でも、やはり士気の下がったままの一日でした。
