遊びをせんとや: サラモア防衛戦

昭和17年11月2日、ニューギニア島東部のサラモアにポートモレスビー、ブナ、Horn Island、Terapoとオーストラリア本土から15波におよぶ激しい空襲がありました。来襲した機種は四発機がB-17F Fortress 36機、B-17E Fortress 18機、B-24D Liberator 54機、双発機がHudson III (LR) 18機、Bolingbroke IV 12機、 Mitchell II 8機、単発機がA-20A1 Havoc 30機、A-24 Banshee 16機、SBD-3 Dauntless 34機で、54機のP-39D Airacobraと6機のHurricane XIIbが護衛についていました。Bolingbroke IVというのは耳慣れない名称ですがぐぐってみるとカナダ製のブレニムなのだそうです。 A-24 BansheeはSBDから空母搭載用の機器をはずした陸軍機バージョン。爆撃機は合計で226機で、この戦線に配置されている連合軍の総力を結集した爆撃だったのだろうと思います。

リプレイで次から次へと続く空襲を眺めながら、すべて地上部隊への爆撃であることに気付きました。高度は急降下爆撃の2000フィートから水平爆撃機の7000フィートと比較的低めだったので、高射砲が2機撃墜しました。また今日はこれら機種のOps lossが9機報告されています。日本側はCAPを上げていませんから、その9機も高射砲部隊の奮闘によるものだと思います。日本側の損害は、死傷者72名、Non Combatのdeviceが10個とEngineer1分隊がdisabledになっただけで、戦闘部隊には被害はありませんでした。ジャングルヘクスでfortification 4なので、この程度で済んだのでしょう。ただ、fatigueやdisruptionには悪影響があったんだろうと思います。

その後の陸戦フェーズでは予想通り、サラモアへの連合軍のDeliberate attackがありました。連合軍側は24th Infantry Divisionと25th Infantry Divisionの2個師団に24th (Sep) Infantry Regimentと2nd NZ Brigadeの兵員25778名、砲464門、車輛413両。日本側の戦闘部隊はKure 3rd SNLFだけですが、防御戦闘には後方要員も参加しますから、兵員6110名、砲105門、車輛24両。修正AV 515対265、オッズ比1対1で今日のところは辛くも防衛に成功しました。でも、fortificationが4から3に低下させられてしまいましたし、兵員の被害数も日本側が上回っているので、明日の攻撃でのサラモア陥落は間違いないところでしょう。

今日の陸戦を見ての疑問は、どうしてワウの攻略を先行させなかったのかという点です。サラモアの日本軍地上部隊がワウに向かって移動、つまり撤退しているってことは連合軍側も当然気付いているはずです。ワウを先に攻略すればサラモアから後退している部隊が、ワウにいる部隊と合流することを妨害できるので、連合軍にとってはお得だと思うんです。でもそうしなかったっていうことは、すでにワウに到着している部隊だけでは、ワウ攻略が困難と連合軍側が判断しているってことなんでしょうか。それなら、それはそれでうれしいことです。
