昭和17年11月29日、ウエーク島東でSS I-36がuncommonなvalorをみせてくれました。I-36は前日、哨戒機に目撃された旨の報告があったので、detection levelを低下させるために、パトロールの位置を変更する指令を出してありました。しかし移動を始める前に連合軍のTFと遭遇してしまったわけです。DD Hullの爆雷攻撃で、船殻に亀裂が入り、船内で爆発がおき、エンジンにダメージが及んだと表示され、その後、浮上を余儀なくされました。浮上したI-36に向けて、DE Gilmer、AK Arided、AK Craterの3隻が攻撃。DE Gilmerのエリコン20mm機関砲はかなり命中しましたが、2隻のAKの砲撃はほとんどあたっていませんでした。I-36は果敢に魚雷と砲で反撃して、AK Arided、AK Craterに魚雷を命中させました。I-36は残念ながら沈没してしまいましたが、アニメーションのラストの沈没音は潜水艦のものではなく水上艦用の音だったので、AKのうちの少なくとも一方、きっと2隻とも撃沈できたとのだと思います。日本海軍の潜水艦保有数がふつうのグランドキャンペーンシナリオよりも少ないRA modで、しかも貴重な乙型潜I-36(VP 11, tonnage 2184)を失ったとはいえ、反撃してAK2隻(ともにVP 12, tonnage 6520)を撃沈した敢闘をたたえたいと思います。
浮上を強いられた潜水艦が反撃して敵艦船を撃沈し、ことによってはそのまま撤退に成功することもあるという話はフォーラムで目にしたことがありますが、自分の手持ちの潜水艦の反撃・2隻撃沈を目にしたのはこれが初めてだったような気がします。I-36の艦長のShiroya T.少佐は名前からみてランダムに生成されたキャラのようですが、Navalスキル 60、Aggression 66と、日本海軍の正規将校としてはごくふつうのひとです。それなのにどうして2隻も撃沈することができたのか?その理由の一端は、沈没した2隻のAKの方にありそうです。今回出会ったTFにはDD, DE, AK2隻のほかに、xAKが3隻含まれていました。3隻のxAKの方は浮上したI-36を攻撃してはきませんでした。遠巻きに眺めていて、無事だったのでしょう。他方、AK2隻はI-36を攻撃したから反撃を受け、撃沈されてしまったんだと思うのです。民間の船であるxAKとは違って、海軍に籍のあるAKはやはり積極的に戦闘に関与してゆく仕様なんでしょう。
昨日、豊後水道でSS Sturgeonの魚雷をくらったAK Manila Maruですが、またまたSS Sturgeonに雷撃されてしまいました。幸いなことに今日は不発でした。前日、このEscort TFへの合流を指示したAPD 4隻はすでに合流を果たしていて、もとからいたDDとあわせると5隻で護衛していたのに、潜水艦の襲撃を許してしまうとは情けない。でも、浸水被害が広がって、昨日の予想通りAK Manila Maru(VP 11, tonnage 5935)は沈没してしまいました。乗船していた陸兵はAPD2隻に救助されましたが、どのくらい救助されたかをみてみると、Infantryは45%、Eng, Supは62%で、砲は0%でした。重い砲を船倉からとり出して回収するなんてことが無理なことをよくシミュレートしていると思いました。
