昭和17年9月13日と14日、二日続けてマンダレーが連合軍の大空襲を受けました。9月12日までマンダレーからCox’s Bazarへseepをかけていて、13日はマンダレーの戦闘機はお休みにしていました。CAPはMeikTilaとMagweに上げてあるからいいかと思っていたのですが、うまくいきませんでした。レーダーの性能のせいなのでしょうが、日本のCAPはその基地上空に空襲があった時でも充分な機数をスクランブルさせられないので、ましてや1~2ヘクス隣りの空襲に素早く対応できる訳がなく、考えが甘かった。また、当たり前ですが、高度で優位を占めていても数的に圧倒されているとやられちゃいます。やはり、戦争は数ですね。
13日は主に地上での撃破で、14日は主にA2Aでの撃墜で、二日間で合計63機がビルマ戦線で破壊されました。飛行場が空襲されると、地上にいるパイロットの被害が生じてモラルが大幅に下がる仕様なのが本当に困りものです。ただ、A2Aに関してはこちらが空襲をかけて敵地上空での被害を受けた時と違って、パラシュートで生還したことになっている人もいるようで、KIAが思ったより少ない印象。それでも、9月13日は、MIA 0、WIA 2、KIA 2、9月14日は、MIA 0、WIA 1、KIA 6と無視できない人的被害です。
コンバットリプレイの赤い線を見ると、連合軍は4つの飛行場から来ているようです。13日の攻撃に投入された航空機を数えてみると、だいたい戦闘機が140機と爆撃機が170機。この他にCAP任務についている戦闘機もいるはずなので、ビルマ戦域の戦闘機数は少し連合軍の方が多いと思います。オーストラリアでは全く見かけないP-38やB-25などアメリカ機が少なくない数含まれているので、当面はビルマへの圧迫が連合軍の主目標と思われます。
日本の戦闘機は攻撃力が低いので連合軍爆撃機をなかなか撃墜できません。それに対してarmorをもつ新鋭のHelenでも、連合軍の強力なFlakやハリケーンなどには簡単に落とされてしまいます。なので、連合軍飛行場の空襲はきわめて困難。今となっては打つ手なし。ビルマ防衛困難問題のエントリーで書いたように、PBEMでは航空優勢のある昭和17年前半に、アキャブ、レド、Cox’s bazar攻略をしないとだめですね。
