昭和17年1月2日、正月早々、ウエーク島で連合軍の戦艦からお年玉をいただきました。ウエーク島には二式大艇が16機配備され、距離15ヘクスで北東を中心に哨戒飛行させているのですが、接近を事前に察知することはできませんでした。ウエーク島の二式大艇のsearch arcはご覧の通りです。距離的には15ヘクスでそれほど無理させていないと思うのですが、16機に担当させるにはこの哨戒圏は広すぎるようです。青は午前の哨戒飛行、緑は午後の哨戒飛行ですが、距離的に午前か午後のどちらかしか飛べないわけで、どうしても抜けができてしまいます。もっと哨戒範囲を狭めて、同じ海域を午後と午前の両方とも飛ぶ(serch arcが黒で表示される)ようにさせないといけません。
やってきたのは、戦艦 South Dakota、Washington、重巡Minneapolis、New Orleans、Salt Lake City、Indianapolisとその仲間たち。戦艦ノースカロライナは昨年12月のウエーク島沖海戦に登場しましたが、同級の戦艦ワシントンの登場は初めてです。連合軍艦隊は駆逐艦まで含めた15隻が艦砲射撃を行いました。Coastal Guns Fire Back! と表示されて、98門の沿岸砲が反撃したそうですが、リプレイを見ていると戦艦の手前に弾着して小さな水柱を立てるばかりで、実際に命中したのは1発だけ。沿岸砲の中で一番大きなものでも口径14cmですから、軽巡や輸送船に命中すれば大きな被害を与えることができるのでしょうが、命中したのは戦艦ワシントンですから、効果は推して知るべし。日本側の被害は死傷者724名、Airbase hits 2、Airbase supply hits 1、Runway hits 10、Port hits 4、Port supply hits 1で、今朝になってのこっていた施設のダメージは港施設 3、飛行場サービス施設 4、滑走路 9でした。
ウエーク島の東隣のヘクスにはなにかのお守りにと思ってI-156潜を配置してありましたが、事前に接触することはできず、艦砲射撃を終えて帰る途中の連合軍TFに接触というか発見され、潜航して難を逃れただけに終わってしまいました。ただ、ひとつラッキーだったことがあります。ウエーク島を攻略した歩兵聯隊の撤収や、ウエーク島の防禦施設建設のための工兵部隊、そしてサプライの揚陸を容易にするため、ウエーク島には6th Shipping Engineer Regimentを配備してありました。ようやくこの船舶工兵の仕事も一段落したので、撤収させるためのFast Transport TFをウエーク島に向かわせていました。今日の時点でウエーク島の西3ヘクスまで接近していますから、艦砲射撃があと一日遅ければ、このTFも巻き添えを食って全滅させられていたことでしょう。
今回の艦砲射撃を経験しての感想ですが、CDが配備されている根拠地への艦砲射撃はCD部隊に集中するものなのでしょうか?ウエーク島に配備されていたLCUは前述の船舶工兵とCombined 8th SNLFと4th JNAF Coyの3部隊です。コンバットリポートを見ると、砲撃はCombined 8th SNLFに集中していて、他の部隊は目標となっていないようです。実際、他の2部隊のdeviceをみてもこの砲撃で破壊されたりdisabledになったdeviceはほとんどありません。沿岸砲の役割は、上陸を試みる輸送船を破壊することもさることながら、上陸準備射撃を行う敵艦の的になって他の味方部隊を守ることなのかなと感じたわけです。ただし、守るとはいっても、沿岸砲の部隊のdisruptionが75になったのと同じように、船舶工兵も70、IJNF Coyも74になっていたので、戦力としては全滅にちかい状態でしたから実質的な意味はないのかもしれませんが。とにかく、CDのある根拠地が艦砲射撃されたのは初めての経験なので、本当にそうなのかどうかは、今後、連合軍の侵攻が進むと明らかになってゆくでしょう。
ウエーク島は孤立していて防御しにくい一方、哨戒機を配備するには絶好の位置ですから、連合軍としてもまた盗りに来るでしょう。きっと艦砲射撃もまたあるはず。ということで、機雷を敷設する準備を始めました。機雷の生産数はシナリオで決められていて、飛行機とは違って自由に生産量を増やすことはできず、そういう意味では貴重なアイテムです。私はRPGなんかでも貴重なアイテムは出し惜しみして苦戦してしまったりする方の性格で、機雷もそんな感じになってます。でも盗賊の跳梁を許さないためにも、ウエーク島には敷設する価値ありですね。
