昭和18年2月15日、今日は悲喜こもごも。でも悪いニュースの方が多かったので、悪い方から。ラシオは相変わらず、爆撃されています。そして、昨日の一機のみでのポートモレスビー夜間空襲に続いて、今日は35機のB-25C Mitchellがポートモレスビーに来襲しました。Airbase hits 5とRunway hits 24の被害はまあ順当なのですが、これに加えてKi-46-III Dinahが3機、Ki-44-IIa Tojoが2機、Ki-45 KAIa Nickが3機、A6M3 Zeroが1機、Ki-56 Thaliaが2機の合計11機が地上で破壊されました(Trackerでみると、合計で14機破壊されたことになっています)。この大きな被害の原因はCAPが飛んでいなかったことだと思います。前日に一機で来てくれたので、昨晩はKi-45 KAIa NickCAPが飛ぶように設定しました。しかしリポートを見ても分かるように”Japanese aircraft no flights”。リプレイを見ながら、CAPの飛んでないのを発見して仰天しました。リプレイが終わってから早速設定を確認しなおしたのですが、間違ってはいません。天候がHeavy rainだからCAPが飛ばなかったんでしょうか。規模7の飛行場でオーバースタックしているわけでもないのに、なんでこんなに地上で破壊されてしまうのか。あまりに大きな被害なので泣きたいくらいです。このまま、ポートモレスビーは飛行場としては放棄しなければならないのかも。
ルーガンビルにBC Kirishima、CA Myokoを基幹とする12隻の艦砲射撃TFをルーガンビルに送りました。途中で連合軍の上陸用舟艇TFと5回遭遇して戦闘が起きました。まだ昭和18年の2月なのと、連合軍側にはレーダー装備のまともな軍艦がいなかったので、相手の発見は両者同時か、または日本側が先手を取って攻撃することができました。 リポートによると、合計でPC 1隻、SC 2隻、PT 7隻、LCM 8隻、LCT 13隻、LCVP 15隻を沈めたようです。LCUを輸送中のTFもあったようで、合計で死傷者1811名とAllied ground lossesが報告されています。また、昨晩がPartly Cloudyの天候でmoonlightも82%あったせいか、PTボートTFとの対戦も一回ありましたが、大きな被害もなく済みました。
今回はルーガンビルの艦砲射撃が最大の目的だったのですが、Runaway hits 2だけと飛行場の破壊に関しては効果がありませんでした。それまでの戦闘で、どの艦も弾薬を使い果たしていたようです。BC Kirishimaも残弾2のみです。帰り道の空襲を考えて、対空砲を艦砲射撃で使い果たさないように、Range 17に設定してありましたが、驚いたことに25 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.と反撃を受けました。1stと11thという、少なくとも二つのMarine Defense Battalionがいました。このMarine Defense Battalionはそれぞれ5in CD Gunを6門ずつ装備しているようです。重巡級の砲なので、range 17でも反撃をくらったのでしょう。DD TokitsukazeがSys 2, Flt 16, Eng 25、DD NowakiがSys 1, Flt 0, Eng 22のダメージを受けました。
複数回の戦闘を経験したのでどの艦もexpが上昇したことと、少なからず連合軍の上陸用舟艇を沈めたことは戦果ですが、ルーガンビル飛行場砲撃と飛行機の地上での破壊はできなかったので、今回の行動は成功したとは言いがたいと思います。今回は前日までまったく気づかれずにできましたが、今後はもっと哨戒を強化するでしょうから、同じ行動を繰り返せるとも思えません。また、上陸用舟艇はバージと同じようにサプライから作成できる船なので、連合軍はきっとたくさん在庫があって、多少沈められても痛痒を感じないのかなとも思います。かえって、連合軍側のこういう離島の飛行場の防衛には、同じヘクスに複数の上陸用舟艇TFを置いておいて、艦砲射撃に来るTFに無駄弾を使わせる方法がつかえたりなんかするのかも。
