昭和18年3月15日、昨晩のラングーンには61機の四発爆撃機が来襲しました。ラングーン付近の天候が悪いためか、隣りのPeguのKi-44-IIa TojoはCAPに参加せず、2ヘクス南のモールメンからKi-45 KAIa Nickが1機だけLRCAPしていました。こういう手薄な迎撃態勢にも関わらず、被害はAirbase hits 1、Runway hits 5、Port hits 1だけ。Severe stormsで爆撃しにくかったのでしょうか?悪天候でも的確に爆撃することもあるので、それだけとも思えません。連日の出撃で連合軍爆撃機部隊のmoraleが低くなっているのかも。
敵の部隊が占拠しているヘクスを占領するためには、地上戦闘で勝利しなければなりません。その地上戦を有利にするためには、事前に空爆で敵の地上部隊の戦力を削っておくことが望まれます。一昨日からビルマ中部のKathaの西のヘクスで、21st Divisionと13th Garrison Unitが連合軍地上部隊と対峙することになりました。この状態を眺めていて、きっと連合軍側はここでの地上戦を制するために日本軍部隊に対する爆撃を始めるだろうな、そして本格的な爆撃を始める前にはまずsweepしてくるだろうな、最初はきっと少数機のsweepから始めるだろうな、少数機のsweepなら多数のCAPが迎撃することで有利な戦果が得られるかもしれないな、といろいろ妄想してしまいました。妄想を実現するために、昨日は1st Sentai(定数42機)をShweboに、21st Sentai(定数30機)をラシオに移動させ、両部隊ともKatha西のヘクスを目的地とした100%LRCAP任務を指示してから、PBEMセーブファイルを送りました。
リプレイを見始めると、予想通りにsweepがありました。このヘクスにはレーダーを持った部隊がいないからだと思うのですが、敵部隊の航跡を示す赤い直線はごくごく短いものしか表示されませんでした。sweeperのP-38G Lightningが目撃されたのは2分前で、59機のKi-44-IIa Tojoの大部分の頭上を通り過ぎていったようです。P-38G Lightning、Ki-44-IIa Tojoともに一機ずつの撃墜でした。
第2波はsweepではなく、17機のHurricane IIc Tropと8機のP-40K Warhawkに護衛された54機の双発爆撃機でした。目視で16分前の探知でしたが、さっきのsweepですでに多くのKi-44-IIa Tojoが当該ヘクスに到着していたためでしょう、55機が迎撃しました。Ki-44-IIa Tojoは2機撃墜されましたが、連合軍戦闘機4機と爆撃機16機を撃墜。第3波は28機のBlenheim IVが戦闘機の護衛なしで来襲して、10機撃墜。 第4波も24機のWellington Icと28機のB-25C Mitchellが戦闘機の護衛なしで来襲しましたが、それまでの戦闘で燃料・弾薬を使い果たしていったん帰還したものが多いと見えて、Ki-44-IIa Tojoは8機しか迎撃できず、B-25C Mitchelを1機撃墜できただけでした。第5波のWellington Ic 14機も護衛なしでしたが、3機が迎撃しただけで撃墜ゼロ。最後の第6波は3機のP-38G Lightningが39000フィートでsweepして、迎撃機はゼロで双方ともに損害なしでした。
Trackerで戦果を確認すると、A2Aの損失がKi-44-IIa Tojoは7機に対して、連合軍は56機でした。Ki-44-IIa Tojoの3機のOps lossは戦闘での被害に関連するものだと思いますし、連合軍側のOps lossにも同じことが言えるでしょう。それにしても、連合軍機のAir lossがこんなに多くなった日は緒戦の頃を含めてもこれまでになかった気がします。おかげでエースが3人生まれました。ただ、今回の出来事は連合軍にとってはsurprised attackだったと思うので、そうそう再現することはできないでしょう。ただ、ビルマでの空襲はここしばらくラングーンとミートキーナに集中していて、中部ビルマの飛行場はメイクテイラもマンダレーもMagweもShweboもTaung Gyiもダメージ0の状態でした。中国への空輸のための飛行場であるレドを守るためにミートキーナの爆撃は続くでしょうが、ビルマ中部の飛行場への爆撃が再開されて、ラングーンの負担が少し軽減されるかも知れません。
同じKi-44-IIa Tojo装備のふたつの戦隊が同じLRCAP 100%の任務設定で戦いましたが、戦闘後の状態がかなり異なります。距離3ヘクスと遠い方のラシオにいた21st SentaiはKIA 2名とWIA 2名の死傷者を出してMorale 90, Fatigue 29にしかならなかったのに、距離2ヘクスと近い方のShweboにいた1st Sentaiは死傷者ゼロでエースが2名誕生したのにMorale 87, Fatigue 81と大きな精神的・肉体的ダメージを受けていました。指揮官も1st Sentaiの方が優秀そうですし、どうしてこうなったのかがよく分かりません。今回の戦闘でこんな風に1st Sentaiのパイロットの大多数がexpかスキルを上昇させていたので、fatigueがたまりやすかったんでしょうか。いずれにせよ、この疲労を回復させるには一週間以上かかりそうです。
