ビルマ方面では夜間空襲が始まっているのに南西方面ではまだだったので、いつ始まるか、ホーランディアとラバウルのどちらに来襲するか気になっていました。昭和17年12月21日の夜はMoonlight 100%でしたが、ラバウルに四発爆撃機34機(B-17F Fortress 9、B-24D Liberator 25)による5波の夜間空襲がありました。二式水戦(A6M2-N Rufe) 7機とゼロ戦52型(A6M5b Zero) 23機が迎撃し、飛行場に対する命中弾はAirbase hits 1、Airbase supply hits 1、Runway hits 7と少なくて済みました。来襲したのが比較的少数機だったことと、CAPがいたために爆撃の精度が落ちたということなのでしょう。しかしこの夜間爆撃の妨害のためにゼロ戦52型は10機、二式水戦は6機が損失となり、また地上で二式大艇一機が破壊されてしまいました。これに対して連合軍の四発爆撃機の損失は０のようです。なんとも理不尽な仕様です。
12月18日にラエを失った後、連合軍の地上部隊がどちらに向かうのかが気になります。偵察機の報告にもとづき、東のフィンシュハーフェンに向かうアイコンと、西のWauに向かうアイコンがマップ上に表示されています。またラエ占領以降、Wauにいる連合軍部隊には西に向かうアイコンしかついていません。ラエの部隊にもWauの部隊にもにもNadzabに向かう動きを示すアイコンはないので、内陸のNadzabは無視するつもりなのかと思っていました。ところが今日のマップ上にはNadzabのヘクスに連合軍の1ユニットが表示されています。地上部隊の動きに関する偵察機の情報が100%確実とはいえないことは知っていましたが、意表外な出現に驚きました。
100%確実とはいえない偵察情報ですが、この部隊は1ユニットだけで、砲2門、車輌69台で歩兵分隊は0のようです。でもどこからやってきたのでしょう。Wauから来たのか？WauからNadzabへの移動は渡河を伴うのでNadzabのヘクスに到着した途端に強制的にShock Attackとなるはずです。ただしこのルールには例外があって、assault valueがゼロのユニットはShock Attackにならないのだそうです。別に、assault valueがゼロだと(shockでもdeliberateでも)attackできないルールがあるのでそうなっているようです。なので、Wauから来たのかもしれません。ラエから来た可能性もあるのかな？ラエからNadzabのヘクスにはsecondary roadがあります。ラエは2日前に占領されたばかりですが、8.3.1 OVERLAND MOVEMENTの表によると、Armorユニットの移動速度は12時間で最大30マイル、Art/AA/Engは最大で15マイルとなっています。疲労度などによってこの移動速度は低下するとなっていますが、2日間あれば到着できるのかもしれません。
こいつ、1ユニットで弱そうだから叩くべきでしょうか。そうしたい気もしますが、気になるのは 後続しているユニットの有無です。弱小な1ユニットだけで来るのが変で、ユニットごとの移動速度に差があって、たまたま1ユニットだけ先に到着してしまったと考える方が順当ですよね。だとすると、攻撃指示を出して日本側が次のターンに攻撃する相手は、この1ユニットだけではなく、複数の強力な連合軍部隊ということになりかねません。根拠地を保有している側には防御の方にメリットがありますから、なにも攻撃してその里を放棄することはないと判断し、このまま様子を見ることにしました。それに、このNadzabに数だけは16ユニット、一万名以上もいますが、どれもサプライ不足と敗北・撤退の繰り返しでAVが非常に低くなっているのです。このゲーム、餓島には5万トン以上のサプライが備蓄されていますが、ニューギニアは史実と同じく補給の不足に苦しんでいます。
