昭和17年12月16日、柳州をめぐっての戦闘が続いています。まずはいつも通りに広東から柳州への空襲。一式戦(Ki-43-Ic Oscar) 15機の護衛で百式重爆(Ki-49-IIa Helen) 30機が中国軍地上部隊の爆撃に向かったところ、柳州上空には14機のP-38G Lightningが待ち伏せていました。一式戦はP-38の敵ではなく、相当数が撃墜された模様です。今日の柳州爆撃は3波に分かれてしまい、続いて第2波として護衛戦闘機なしで九七重爆(Ki-21-IIa Sally)53機、第3波としてやはり護衛戦闘機なしで百式重爆20機が柳州上空でP-38に迎撃されてしまいました。Trackerによると一式戦9機、百式重爆7機、九七重爆6機の合計24機の損失と報告されていました。14機しかいなかったのに、P-38G恐るべし。
サプライを破壊するためには飛行場を爆撃する必要があり、柳州の飛行場は繰り返し爆撃していて使用不能のはずです。つまりP-38GはLRCAPだったわけですが、どこからかとみてみると6ヘクス離れたChihkiang(懐化)からのようです。ここ、前日には在地機の存在がなかったので、間違えないと思います。P-38Gは増槽をつけると作戦可能な距離が16ヘクスもありますから、6ヘクスも離れた飛行場からでもこのような威力あるLRCAPができるのだと思います。その後の空輸フェーズに

という表示がありました。これまで何度も書いているように、柳州の日本軍部隊はサプライ不足に苦しんでいます。これを少しでも緩和しようと、武漢の輸送機部隊に柳州へのサプライ投下を指示してありました。日本の輸送機の一機あたりサプライ搭載量の少なさからすると雀の涙ほどにしかならないんですけどね。これまでこの空輸作戦で輸送機が撃墜されたことはなかったのですが、さきほど空襲部隊が散々な目に会わされていますから、さぞや多数の輸送機が撃墜されたのではと思いました。しかし調べてみると、武漢の輸送機は一式貨物輸送機(Ki-56 Thalia)が一機Ops Lossになっているだけです。武漢・柳州間の距離は12ヘクスもあり、Ops Lossになりやすい長距離の空輸任務です。また迎撃されたのはKi-56 ThaliaではなくKi-57-II Topsyですから、このOps LossがP-38Gの迎撃によるのかどうかは判断が難しいところです。
爆撃機と護衛戦闘機には甚大な被害が出たのに輸送機の被害はゼロかあっても軽微なもの。この落差はなぜなのか？今日のこの現象を見ながら、先日読んだ Sweep and LRCAP Questions (No Khyberbill Please)というスレを想い出しました。これは日本側のプレイヤーが連合軍の空輸を迎撃するにはどうしたらいいのか？ということでたてたスレで、その疑問に対しては輸送機のいる飛行場を叩くとか、空輸の目的地にLRCAPをするとか、常識的な答えがされていました。しかし、それら常識的な答えの中でひときわ目を惹く
奇妙なことに、戦闘機は(指示されたLRCAPの目標までの)距離がNormal Range - 3以下の時にだけ輸送機を撃墜できるようだ。例えば、ゼロ戦(A6M2)のNormal Rangeは7なので、LRCAPの目標までの距離が4以下の時にだけ輸送機を撃墜できる。これは単に目標が遠いとLRCAPの効率が低下するということを意味するのではなく、閾値が存在するということなんだ。
というレスがありました。ゼロ戦(A6M2)のNormal Rangeを7としていますから、ここでいうNormal Rangeは増槽をつけないNormal Rangeのようです。P-38Gの増槽なしのNormal rangeは５ですから、6ヘクス離れたChihkiangからのLRCAPで輸送機を撃墜できなかったのは、この方のレスと矛盾しない結果です。このレスをつけた人は、今回の柳州のエピソードと同じような、爆撃機の被害が大きいのに輸送機には被害がないという現象をみて、テストをしてこれを確認したのだそうです。他のベテランの人からも賛同と賞賛のレスばかりで、矛盾する現象を経験したというレスはついていませんから、たしかにこういう仕様は存在するんでしょうね。
その後、陸戦フェーズでは柳州の中国軍が昨日に続いてのShock Attackを実施しました。日本側部隊は連日の戦闘で疲労困憊し、しかもサプライも不足しています。今日はオッズ比3対1と大敗となりました。もういい加減撤退して部隊を再建したいところなのですが、Combat modifiersにDefender: leaders(+)とついてしまったためなのか、敗北しながらも陣地に踏みとどまってしまいました。別に死守命令(そもそもこのゲームには死守命令はありません)を出しているわけではないし、総司令官としては部隊を全滅させずに撤退(転進)してほしいところなのです。でも、日本の下級指揮官の性向と兵隊の健気さとをよくシミュレートしているゲームなので、こうなってしまうのはやむを得ないところかもしれません。
今日、唯一の良い報せは潜水艦。ハワイのはるか北東沖、シアトルへの航路上でSS I-1がxAK Montanan(VP 6, tonnage 3050)を撃沈しました。ほかにAPもいるコンボイなので、大きなAPの方を狙った欲しかった気もしますが、まああまり欲張らないことにしましょう。
