昭和17年8月10日、連合軍潜水艦に悩まされるのはいつもと変わりませんが、今夜はCA Cornwall、CA Salt Lake City、CA IndianapolisによるNdeni(これはンデニと読むのでしょうか)への艦砲射撃がありました。巡洋艦の艦砲射撃なので、翌朝まで残っていたダメージは、港 18、飛行場施設 8、滑走路 17とそれほど大きくはありませんでした。ただ、横浜空T-1の二式大艇 4機が損傷し、可動機9機となっていました。その後の連合軍の行動を考えると、この可能射撃はNdeniの二式大艇の哨戒活動を妨害するためだったんだろうと思われます。
昨日、ルーガンビルの艦砲射撃を狙っていた日本のTFが連合軍空母の空襲でひどく叩かれたことはお伝えしました。それら損傷艦船の撤退を支援すべく、この方面の日本側の可動空母6隻、CV隼鷹・飛鷹、CVL龍驤・祥鳳・瑞鳳・日進をソロモン諸島北東に進出させました。連合軍が損傷したCA那智・三隈を空母で追撃してきても、6隻まとめればそれなりに戦えるんではないか、ルンガからの基地機の支援も期待できるし、と考えたわけです。しかし結論からいうと甘すぎた判断でした。というのも、参加させた6隻の空母のうちCV隼鷹・飛鷹、CVL日進の艦載機は以前のエントリーにも書いた8月7日の戦闘ですでにすり減っていたこと、またこれまでのたびたびの戦闘で実証されたように陸攻の雷撃は商船には非常に有効でも戦闘艦にはなかなか当たらないこと、があるからです。
日本側はCV隼鷹・飛鷹、CVL日進をBB日向、CA最上を加えたTFとCVL龍驤・祥鳳・瑞鳳をBB大和が護衛するTFの二つに分けてソロモン諸島の東北の海上に進出させました。ここ1ヶ月の戦闘で戦艦、巡洋艦の沈没・損傷数が多く、非常に手薄なTFです。それに対して連合軍も、空母機動部隊と護衛のTFを進出させました。連合軍のTFが発見した日本のTFに反応して接近してきたため、彼我の距離は3ヘクスとなりました。
午前中の攻撃の最初は、ルンガの一式陸攻24機を63機のゼロ戦(A6M2 ZeroとA6M3b Zero)の護衛で攻撃。132機のCAPに阻まれ、雷撃したのは15機で、CVレキシントンに魚雷を一発命中させることができただけでした。ルンガには一式陸攻53機と百式重爆27機がいるのですが、もう少したくさん攻撃に行ってほしかったところ。次は80機のゼロ戦(A6M5 Zero)の護衛で39機の九七艦攻(B5N2 Kate)と43機の九九艦爆(D3A1 Val)の攻撃。115機のCAPの活躍で投弾できたのは九七艦攻 23機と九九艦爆 25機。Flakで撃墜される機もあり、CVレキシントンに爆弾1と魚雷１、CVサラトガに爆弾2と魚雷1が命中しました。
連合軍はF4Fワイルドキャット30機とMartlet II 3機の護衛で13機のAlbacore Iと132機のSBD-3 Dauntlessと59機のTBF-1 Avengerが来襲。レーダーで30分前に探知し、CAPの34機のゼロ戦もそれなりに検討しましたが、この攻撃機の多さにはお手上げ。BB日向、CV飛鷹・隼鷹、CVL龍驤・祥鳳・瑞鳳・日進、CA青葉・最上、DD山雲・霜月に多数の被弾。この午前の戦闘でCVL日進は沈没しました。多くの空母の飛行甲板がこの午前の戦闘ですでに使用不能となったようで、飛鷹龍驤・祥鳳・瑞鳳・日進の飛行隊がOntong JawaとNdeniに不時着しました。
午後は、ルンガから一式陸攻13機の攻撃。護衛に当たったゼロ戦40機の中には、午前の戦闘でNdeniに不時着したものも混じっていました。連合軍のCAPは67機と午前中よりはかなり少なくなっていたのですが、CVサラトガと駆逐艦一隻に一本ずつの魚雷を命中させることができただけでした。空母からの攻撃はありません。
午後の連合軍の攻撃は戦闘機25機の護衛で、13機のAlbacore Iと93機のSBD-3 Dauntlessと34機のTBF-1 Avengerが来襲。すでにCAPを上げることはできなくなっていて、BB大和、CV隼鷹、CA青葉、DD山雲・大潮、朝雲、吹雪、雷、鈴月に多数の被弾。戦闘後、CV隼鷹、CVL瑞鳳、DD山雲・吹雪・東雲が沈没しました。まだ沈没していないフネをみても、浸水被害83のCA青葉と火災が53に達しているCV飛鷹は絶望的でしょう。そのほかは連合軍が追撃をせず、しかも運がよければ助かるかもしれないというところでしょうか。連合軍にはCVイラストリアスを含めてまだ無傷の空母が4隻ほどはありそうですからそれをつかってもいいし、たくさんある巡洋艦なんかはついげきさせるのに最適でしょう。
Trackerで今日の損失機数をみてみると、ゼロ戦と九九艦爆にGround Lossが計上されているので、日本の空母が沈没したことは連合軍にも伝わっているでしょう。でも、その数が少ないことに驚いたかも。対して、連合軍の艦載機にGround lossはなく、レキシントン・サラトガともに沈没していない公算が大です。優秀なダメコンだし、このまま生還するんだろうと思います。連合軍の沈没確実なのは駆逐艦一隻のみで、日本側の被害を考えると投了したくなるところです。
上記の損傷艦はほぼすべて喪失するとすると、日本側に残る無傷の空母は赤城とCVE大鷹だけ。加賀が3日で、飛龍があと16日でアップグレードが完了しますが当面はそれだけ。また、水上戦闘艦も多数ダメージを受けているので、内南洋に通商破壊用のTFを送られても対応は困難かも。いまはルーガンビルを攻略した直後なので地上兵力に余裕がないかもしれませんが、あと1ヶ月もしないうちにニューギニアにいる歩兵師団とルーガンビルにいる師団とをつかってお好みのところに上陸してくることが予想されます。ふつうはマーシャル諸島からなんでしょうが、ナウル→ポナペを攻略し、その次にトラックなんてルートで侵攻してきても、なすすべなしになりそうです。今日の戦闘でもそうですが、ふつうに戦えば数が少ない方の被害が大きくなるというのは鉄則ですね。ここしばらく各個撃破の対象を連合軍に提供することに終始しているので、なんとかしなければいけません。というか、教訓を学んでも実践に活かすことが難しいということを学びつつある今日この頃です。
