昭和17年8月27日、昨日連合軍に占領されたTerapoに対して、ラバウルとホーランディアからゼロ戦(A6M3b)71機が3波にわたってsweepを行いました。護衛空母の搭載している戦闘機を減らすことが目的でしたが、Terapoにはすでに多数の陸軍機が進出していて、合計で93機がCAPに上がっていました。Trackerによるとスコアは24対23で、期待したような勝利は得られなかったばかりか、パイロットにKIA 8名、WIA 3名、MIA 9名と多数の死傷者を出して、実質的には大敗でした。
苦戦の原因は、Terapoはラバウルからもホーランディアからも距離11ヘクスと遠く、パイロットは疲労した状態で空戦に臨まなければならなかったこと。史実のルンガ上空の空戦と同じようなものですね。さらに、このゲームではHRで戦闘機の攻撃的任務の高度を、その機種のManeuverabilityの値が2番目に高い高度までに制限してあります。ゼロ戦の場合は高度20000フィートのsweepになるので、それも芳しくない戦果の原因だろうと思います。
このsweepは本当は昨日実施させたくて、指示してあった作戦でした。昨日ならCAPしている戦闘機は護衛空母の艦載機だけでもっと良いスコアを残せたでしょうし、Terapoがまだ日本側のものだったので、パイロットの死傷ももっと少なかったでしょうに。
ニューギニア南岸のMeraukeにオーストラリの空挺部隊の降下があり、占領されました。Meraukeに駐屯していた部隊はしばらく前に輸送機で撤退させてあり、無人でした。このMeraukeを占領されたことで、昨日心配だと書いたアラフラ海経由の蘭印攻略作戦がより現実味を帯びて来た気がします。
今日はベンガル湾の中央近くまで連合軍のTFが進出して来ていました。セイロン島周囲にASW TFがいるのはいつものことなのですが、ここまででばってきたことはありません。シンガポールからビルマへ連日のようにサプライを運ぶ貨物船を運航しいるので、それを狙いに来たものか？でも今日の時点では北西に向けて航行中とのことなので、単に日本側の反応を探るだけの目的なのか？念のため、マレー半島西側の船団は避難させました。
