先日のエントリーでルーガンビルにいた護衛空母に攻撃をしかけて散々な目にあったことをお伝えしました。あの日、正規空母はすでにヌーメア近くまで南下していることが報告されていたので、鬼の居ぬ間にルーガンビルに艦砲射撃を加えてやろうと考えました。ルーガンビルには100機近くの戦闘機がいるので、たくさん破壊できるかなと期待しながら、明日の夜の艦砲射撃を想定して、BB大和・日向にCA那智・三隈・最上をルーガンビルの北距離8の地点に派遣しました。
しかしそんな甘い考えを連合軍側はお見通しで、昭和17年8月9日、待ち構えていた連合軍空母にひどく叩かれることになりました。艦砲射撃TFは3波で合計85機のSBD-3 Dauntlessと15機のTBF-1 Avengerの爆撃を受け、大和に9発、日向に10発、那智に2発、三隈に3発の1000ポンド爆弾が命中。戦艦である大和と日向は多数の命中弾があったにもかかわらず10台のダメージでmajorなダメージなしでしたが、重巡の那智と三隈は2-3発の命中で重態になってしまいました。なんとか帰り着けそうな気はしますが、送りオオカミがついて来たりするとダメでしょうね。
さて、今回のルーガンビルをめぐっての戦いには、SSX Ha-4を搭載したI-24が参加していました。もともとヌーメア方面を目指して航行中にたまたま連合軍のルーガンビル上陸作戦が明らかになり、参加したわけです。242ターンにルーガンビルの南東のヘクスでSSX Ha-4を切り離し、I-24はその東の深海ヘクスに、SSX Ha-4はルーガンビル周囲の浅海ヘクスを転々として、247ターンにルーガンビルから南西2ヘクスの深海ヘクスで合流・合体しました。この間、I-24は魚雷を放つチャンスを得ることができませんでしたが、SSX Ha-4は245ターン(8月7日)にDD Stuartを雷撃して外しています。まあ、戦果がなかったことはいいのですが、不思議なことが一つ。242~247ターンの間、SSX Ha-4は単独で行動していたのに、まったく燃料が減らず、航続距離も84のままでした。これまでSSXを使った際にはきちんと燃料が減少して0になっていたのを記憶しています。おそらくバグなんでしょうが、こういう不思議なことが起きた原因は何なんでしょう？
