Cooktownで貨物船を7隻撃沈


3日ほど前からオーストラリア東北部のCooktownに連合軍の艦船が停泊していると報告がありました。ポートモレスビーの艦砲射撃を狙っているのではと心配になって、ラバウルからポートモレスビー近海にCA羽黒と駆逐艦4隻をパトロールに派遣しました。しかし昨日の偵察機の報告でCooktownにいるのは貨物船らしいとのこと。昭和17年4月11日夜、Cooktownに殴り込みをかけることにしました。偵察報告通り、在泊していたのはxAKLばかりで7隻。すべて沈めて帰還の途につきました。今回の攻撃で命中した魚雷は一本です。魚雷は連合軍側に存在を気づかれる前に発射していています。その後、動き始めたとはいえ行足のついていない商船に魚雷が一本しか命中しないようでは、戦闘艦との夜戦で魚雷を命中させることなんてとても無理そうと感じてチェックしてみたところ、発射された魚雷はDD子日(Nenohi)からの一本だけでした。魚雷は効果だから商船相手につかうのをためらったんでしょうかね。結果的に一発一中だったわけです。


Cooktownは二級道路しか通じていない辺鄙な場所ではありますが、ダーウィンとは違って、オーストラリア東岸の補給ネットワークにつながっています。また地上部隊も時間をかければ移動できる場所です。貧乏な日本側をプレイしている身としては、艦船の無駄遣いをしなくてもいいのにと感じてしまいます。でも、この7隻のxAKLのうち6隻はフィリピン船籍で、緒戦期にフィリピンを脱出した船でした。フィリピン攻略中に幸運にも脱出できた船だから、沈められても惜しくはないと連合軍側は考えているのかも知れません。
ところで、いろいろ試行してみましたが、現在では海路によるルーガンビルへの補給は無理と考えています。その結論を出すことになったのは、4月初めに送ったAPD3隻からなるFast Transport TFでした。揚陸中の4月5日にAPD NamikazeとAPD Tachikazeが1000フィートの低空からのB-26 Marauderによる爆撃を受けて500ポンド爆弾各1発命中。4月6日にはAPD Nokazeも同様の攻撃でやはり500ポンド爆弾が1発命中しました。3隻とも沈没しなかったのは不幸中の幸いですが、APDはすでに9隻が沈んでいて、これ以上の損失は避けたいものです。APDによる蟻輸送鼠輸送は中止とし、5日かかってラバウルまで帰還しました。そのうちで被害の大きかったAPD Namikazeですが、Sys 21, Flt 25(16), Eng 6と、majorなダメージが16もあります。しかし、ラバウルにはARとARDがいるので、1652トンのAPDのこの程度のダメージなら、 本土へ回航しなくても完全に修理できます。緒戦期にARDをトラックからラバウルに移動させておいたのが功を奏しました。

先日雷撃したBB Warspiteですが、4月11日も4月10日と同じヘクスにいると報告されました。しかも、11日も陸攻・大艇ともに攻撃に飛んでくれなかった点も10日と同じでした。2日続けて同じ悪天候だったんでしょうかね。で、燃料切れなどの最悪の条件下でもTFは一日に最低1ヘクスを移動できるのがWitP AEの仕様です。では10日と11日のWarspiteの位置が同じだったのはなぜでしょうか?ダメージの大きな艦船を移動させる際には移動中にダメージの増加するのを避けるため、速度をmission speedではなくcruise speedに設定するのがよく知られた生活の知恵です。ところが、mission speedが1しかないEscort TFの速度をcruise speedに設定すると0になってしまって移動できなくなる現象があることを、以前のPBEMで一度経験したことがあります。BB Warspiteもかなり状態は悪いのでしょうから、これが起きているのかなと推測しています。


あと、今日は規模300の油田のあるビルマ中部のMagweを無血占領できました。連合軍の武士の情けか。
