ビルマの空戦で好スコア 昭和17年8月24日


昭和17年8月24日にはラシオに5波、合計で66機の連合軍機の爆撃がありました。うちわけは、 B-17E Fortress 12機、LB-30 Liberator 3機、Blenheim IV 11機、Hudson IIIa 27機、Wellington Ic 10機、B-25C Mitchell 13機で、四発爆撃機はカルカッタから、双発機はチッタゴンから飛来したようです。最初は12機の一式戦(Ki-43-Ic Oscar)がCAPしていましたが、繰り返しやってくる爆撃機に、最後はCAP 0機になってしまいました。しかし戦闘機が護衛についていなかったので一式戦には損失機がなく、双発爆撃機に10機の損失が報告されていました。それでもラシオ飛行場は滑走路ダメージ55、サービス施設ダメージ33で一時休業状態に追い込まれました。一式戦の飛行隊はラングーンに下げて休養させることにしました。昨日はミートキーナに連合軍機の爆撃がありましたが、連合軍はCAPの手薄なビルマ北・東部の飛行場を狙ってきています。レドから中国へサプライを空輸するには、これらの飛行場は邪魔でしょうからね。また、日本側としてもこれらの飛行場のCAPに充分な数の戦闘機や整備部隊を配備することが困難なので、ある程度の被害はやむを得ないかと思っています。
日本側はチッタゴンを叩くことを目標に、間欠的にsweepを実施してきました。本当は毎日sweepしたいところですが、疲労を貯めさせないよう考えると連日出撃させるに充分なだけの数の二式戦部隊がないので間欠的に出撃させてしていました。ここしばらくチッタゴンにCAPは見あたらず、連合軍はチッタゴンの防空をあきらめたのかなと判断しました。そこで、今日は二式戦2個飛行隊全力でsweepを行った後、一式戦の護衛で百式重爆が飛行場を爆撃する予定で臨みました。
まずMagweからチッタゴンに3波、合計で68機の二式戦(Ki-44-IIa Tojo)がsweepを実施しました。連合軍側はそろそろ日本側が爆撃機を送り込んでくるのではと予想していたのでしょう、今日はCAP最大時93機のCAPが上がっていました。この時期の二式戦は強力で、二式戦13機の損失に対しCAP側に47機の損失が報告されていました。二式戦パイロットの死傷者はKIA 5名、WIA 1名、MIA 2名でした。連合軍側は自軍の飛行場上空なのでパイロットの死傷は少ないでしょうが、それをさしひいても今日の空戦はなかなか上出来だったと思います。残念なのは爆撃機部隊が出撃してくれず、画龍点睛を欠いたことです。爆撃機部隊か護衛戦闘機部隊の指揮官が、チッタゴンにはCAPが多数上がっていて危険と判断したんでしょうかね。
