ラバウル空襲でCA最上が被弾



8月14日、ラバウル入港を目前にして炎上中のCVL翔鳳とひどく損傷したCA最上を、連合軍機に目撃されてしまいました。すぐにもラバウル港への空襲を予測していたのですが、昨日は来襲しませんでした。連合軍はCAPの迎撃による爆撃機の被害を懸念してラバウル空襲を断念したのかもと希望的観測を抱いたのですが、そうではなく、昨日は単に天候かなにかの事情が悪かっただけのようです。昭和17年8月16日、35機のB-17E Fortress、10機のB-17F Fortress、4機のB-24D Liberator、合計で49機の四発爆撃機がラバウルにやってきました。ラバウルではゼロ戦(A6M2 Zero、A6M3b Zero、A6M5 Zero) 32機と二式水戦(A6M2-N Rufe) 5機、二式複戦(Ki-45 KAIa Nick) 5機が迎撃しました。空襲警報の発令は12分前だったのでスクランブルしたものの接敵できなかったものもあります。他の戦線でも空戦があったのでこの戦闘での損失機数を特定はできませんが、TrackerによるとCAPに5機、四発爆撃機側に少なくとも3機の損失が報告されています。爆撃の被害は、CA最上とAKEあとらす丸に500ポンド爆弾が各一発命中。500ポンド爆弾という小さな方の爆弾だったので、CA最上はSysダメージ 1とEngダメージ 10上昇しただけで済みました。
昨日は爆撃がなかったので、CVL翔鳳、CA最上ともにdisbandしてreadinessモードではなくpiersideモードで修理を始めてしまっています。AKEあとらす丸はASW TFの爆雷補充などのために在泊していましたが、撤収することにしました。CVL翔鳳、CA最上については、このまま修理を続けた方がいいのか、それともラバウルで修理を続けると爆撃の被害で却ってダメージが上昇していってしまうから出航させた方がいいのか、微妙なところです。2隻とも出航させるとどこに行くにせよ航海の途中で沈没してしまう危険もないわけではないですから。連合軍側が爆撃機の損失を顧みず明日以降も爆撃に来るようなら出航せざるを得ないかなと思っています。
ビルマでも空戦がありました。日本側はMagweからゼロ戦(A6M3b Zero) 25機と二式戦(Ki-44-IIa Tojo) 35機でチッタゴンにsweep。この60機がまとまってsweepしてくれればいいのですが、ゼロ戦2波、その後に二式戦が2波と少数機ずつの攻撃となり、先行したゼロ戦(A6M3b Zero)を13機、後から到着した二式戦の方も4機ほど失う結果となりました。チッタゴンのCAPの連合軍戦闘機はハリケーン、P-39、P-40だけでなく、Martlet IIや貴重なP-38Eを含む6機種。Martlet IIをぐぐってみたところ、イギリス海軍に供与されたF4Fのことだそうです。以前、CV Indomitableを撃沈していますから、それ用のMartlet IIを他の飛行隊に流用したのかなと想像します。今日の日本側のラバウルでも5機種がCAPについていましたが、窮してくるとCAPに上がれるものをすべて投入する傾向はお互い様のようです。結局、チッタゴン上空の空戦での連合軍戦闘機の損失は32機に達し、ばらばらのsweepではありましたが、スコア的には今日のところは優勢で終えることができました。
日本側はチッタゴンへのsweepと並行してアキャブへの爆撃を行いました。本当ならチッタゴンを爆撃したいところです。でも、armor rating 1の百式重爆(Ki-49-IIa Helen)でもCAPの数がもっと減ってくれないと、チッタゴンに行かせる気にはなれません。陸攻ほどではないにしても、陸軍の爆撃機も本当に脆弱ですから。
連合軍の方は、チッタゴンとおそらくはカルカッタから、Magweの東隣のヘクスのメイクテーラ飛行場爆撃に22機の四発爆撃機を送り込んできました。Magweを爆撃から守るためには、隣りのメイクテーラ飛行場にもCAP戦闘機用の飛行場を稼働させておくことが必要だと思っています。この点については連合軍も同じ見方をしているから、メイクテーラの爆撃に来るのでしょう。CAPの18機の一式戦(Ki-43-Ic Oscar)と4機の二式複戦屠龍(Ki-45 KAIa Nick)が迎撃しましたが、Airbase hits 8、Airbase supply hits 3、Runway hits 30の被害と、一機の百式司偵が地上で破壊されてしまいました。まだ戦闘機CAP用の飛行場としては稼働中です。
各戦線を総合すると、今日一日で連合軍は50機、日本側は27機の損失でした。なかでも、飛来した71機の四発爆撃機のうちの14機もlossにできたのはうれしい戦果です。先日の珊瑚海・ソロモン海の空母戦では多数の飛行機を失って日本側惨敗のスコアでしたが、昭和17年夏という時期はふつうに戦えばまだ互角に戦える時期なのだと実感します。ビルマもラバウルも同じような戦いが明日以降も続くのでしょうが、このスコアを維持できればと願うばかりです。
