昭和17年2月3日、パレンバンへの艦砲射撃を計画しました。艦砲射撃するTFは、最高速度で一晩航行すれば艦砲射撃の対象ヘクスに行き着けるヘクス(8~9ヘクス)に前日は位置し、最高速度で走り込んで艦砲射撃をして最高速度でもとのヘクスに戻るという動きをします。このあたりの連合軍の航空脅威は対したことがないのと、前回はremain on stationに設定にして昼の艦砲射撃で大きな効果があったので、今回もremain on stationに設定して接近させたところ、昨日はパレンバンの北東隣りのヘクスまで接近していました。この段階で南を見ると、ビリトン島の南方距離2ヘクスにBB2隻、CA1隻、CL4隻からなる連合軍TFが北西に向けて航行中という偵察情報がありました。BBは見間違いで、1月28日にパレンバンで暴れたCL主体のTFだと判断しました。remain on stationの設定だと艦砲射撃後にパレンバンのヘクスにとどまり、弾薬の減った状態でこのTFと戦闘するのは好ましくありません。艦砲射撃を中止して帰投させようかかなり迷いました。でもすでにパレンバンまで1ヘクスまで来ているので、retirement allowedに設定しなおせば、パレンバンから7ヘクスも離れている連合軍TFがやって来る前に艦砲射撃後すぐに撤退して、空振りさせることができるのでは考えました。
ところがリプレイをみてみると、艦砲射撃画面から始まるのではなく水上戦闘画面が先行し、合計3回の水上戦闘が行われました。一回目は Willis, A.N. crosses the 'T' と表示され、T字戦法を許す始末。また月明92%の晩でしたが、二回目の接触ではCONTACT: Allies radar detects Japanese task force at 17,000 yardsとレーダーが有効に働いたようです。魚雷でCL大井とDD嵐の2隻が沈没し、連合軍の方はDDが2隻沈んだだけでした。夜が開けてからジョホールバルの一式陸攻が雷撃しましたが、CLとDDに一本づつ命中しただけでした。艦砲射撃ができず、またTrackerではCL1隻とDD2隻の沈没が報告されているだけなので、このやりとりは戦略的にも戦術的にも敗北です。艦砲射撃TFの動きが予想とはまったく違ったことと、艦砲射撃TFが水上戦闘TFよりも不利な仕様があるのでしょう。その辺が敗北の原因かなと思います。
連合軍のCV TFは昨日より9ヘクス北上していて、I-16がDDを雷撃してはずしました。今日はCV 9隻とCVL 1隻がいると報告されています。昨日にしても今日にしても、連合軍TFの構成がこんなに詳しく報告されるのは珍しい気がします。Glenでもこんなに詳しい情報は得られないし、そもそもこの近くにはGlen搭載潜水艦はいないし、またまだ九七大艇の哨戒域内には入っていないし、不思議。それにしても、空母TFと日本の潜水艦との連日の接触はまるで追跡されているようで、連合軍側司令官も当惑しているのではないでしょうか。たまたま、I-16とI-162が帰投するルートと連合軍TFの移動経路が一致しているだけなのですが。
