昭和17年2月19日、Port Blairのヘクスに昨日目撃報告のあったプリンス･オブ･ウエールズを発見し、バンコクから一式陸攻30機と九六陸攻13機が攻撃しました。Port BlairではP-39DがCAPしていましたが、15機のゼロ戦が護衛についていたので、被撃墜はP-39Dが3機とA6M2が2機で、陸攻は無事でした。プリンス･オブ･ウエールズに2本とAG Gemma、AR Castorにも魚雷を命中させました。午後にも同じヘクスにバンコクから48機の陸攻が攻撃しましたが、プリンス･オブ･ウエールズとAG Gemma、AR Castorの姿は見えなかったので3隻とも沈んだのだと思います。
リプレイを見ると、プリンス･オブ･ウエールズは攻撃開始時から黒煙を上げていました。これまでのプリンス･オブ･ウエールズのたどった経路を推測すると、まず開戦時にMersingの沖で陸攻が魚雷を2本命中させました。おそらく、シンガポールかバタビアで応急修理をしたのでしょう。1月下旬には外洋での航海がなんとか可能な状態になって、オーストラリアのパース方面へ退避を始めたのだと思われます。しかし1月31日にインド洋のクリスマス島の南東でmini KBに発見され、九七艦攻の攻撃で魚雷が2本命中しました。これで沈んだのかなと思っていましたが、連合軍のダメコンは優秀でおそらくスマトラ島の西側にある島の港になんとか逃げ込んだのでしょう。そこに修理のためAR Castorを派遣したものと思われます。しかし2月18日にはスマトラ島西岸のBenkoelenが占領されるなど、スマトラ島の西側の島も危険になってきたと判断して、アンダマン諸島を経由して、インド東部の港への航海を始めたという感じだったのでしょう。インド洋を横断して直接セイロン島へ向かっていれば、少なくとも日本側に発見されることはなかったでしょうが、まだダメージがかなり大きかったんでしょうね。今日の2本とあわせて合計6本の魚雷で何とか沈めることができました。またAR Castorを沈めることができたのも地味にうれしい戦果です。お互いにARは数が少なく貴重な存在ですから。
追記、今日の返信で相手の方が報らせてくれたところでは、シンガポールとバタビアで修理して61/67/0までになったので、回航を決断したのだそうです。タイトルの「(はず)」は不要になりました :-)
上述したように、陸攻は午前の攻撃に次いで午後もこのTFを攻撃しました。午後は駆逐艦4隻に48機が48本の魚雷を放って、命中数は0。巡洋艦に対してもその傾向はありますが、陸攻の魚雷は駆逐艦に対しては本当に当たりませんね。Port Blairのヘクスから距離6ヘクスにはmini KBもいましたが、こちらからの攻撃はありませんでした。双発の陸攻でなく単発の艦攻なら駆逐艦を仕留められてのかなと思うと残念。今日は午前と午後で合計91本の魚雷(サプライ910トンにあたる)を消費したわけですが、これを書きながらバンコクのAir HQに魚雷の補充することを忘れていることに気づきました。もうPBEMセーブファイルは送ってしまったので、手遅れ。
そして、2月4日に空母レキシントン、エンタープライズと水上砲戦をした戦艦霧島と比叡がようやく横須賀港に帰り着きました。霧島の方はSys 63, Flt 8(5), Eng 13と上部構造に大きな損害を受けていて、副砲や機銃も一部失われています。入渠してチェックしてみると、修理完了まで5ヶ月強もかかるとのこと。考えてみれば、真珠湾の戦艦にも匹敵するくらいの被害ですから、無事に帰投できただけ儲けものと考えるべきかもしれません。それにしても機動部隊の護衛用の高速戦艦が2隻とも数ヶ月使えなくなったは痛い。比叡の修理期間は3ヶ月ほどですが、この2隻で横須賀工廠の修理ドックがほとんど埋まってしまいました。
