昭和17年2月20日、ニューヘブリデス諸島のEfateにサプライを輸送して、ツラギに帰還途中のAPD3隻が、2波の連合軍機の空襲を受け、3隻とも沈没しました。Efateは日本が占領しているものとしては最南東端の根拠地で、南西にはニューカレドニアのヌーメア、南東にはフィジーという連合軍の大きな根拠地があります。連合軍はそれらの根拠地の港と飛行場を拡張中ですから、時間が経過するほどEfateへの輸送は難しくなると思われます。また、すでに通常の輸送船での輸送は危険だろうと考えてAPD 5隻のFasttransport TFを送りました。2月19日にAPDはEfateに到着しましたが、港の規模が1なので3隻のAPDしかDockできません。そこでTFを二つに分けて、3隻のTFはdockして、2隻のTFはdockしないでサプライを揚陸させました。Fasttransport TFだとdockしてもしなくても同じだったようで、揚陸が済んで二つのTFともTulagiに帰還する途中でした。まあ、残り2隻のAPDが無事だったことと、少なくとも2隻のアメリカ空母の所在が判明したことを、AEの神様に感謝したいと思います。
ルーガンビルを攻略途中の昭和17年1月30日にも、5隻のAPDをアメリカ空母の艦載機による空襲で沈められているので、APDの損失はこれで合計8隻になります。速度が速いので小さな部隊の輸送などにAPDは重宝するので、今後はもっと大切に使っていかなければと思います。それにしても、連合軍のルーガンビル上陸に刺戟されて実施したルーガンビル逆上陸とEfate占領ですが、どうも相手の望み通りに進行しているような感じがします。日本海軍が史実のソロモンキャンペーンで飛行機と艦船をすり減らしていったのと同じ事が、ニューヘブリデス・キャンペーンで再現しないようにしないとまずい。
とまあ、先のことを心配するよりも、まずはこの後の連合軍空母の動きが気になります。おとなしく後退するのか、それともルーガンビルを空襲して帰るのか、はたまた北上してルンガ・ツラギを狙ったりするのか。ツラギはこの方面の拠点なので、輸送船とタンカーが積荷を揚陸中で、軽巡や駆逐艦もdisbandしています。ここを狙われるとプチ･パールハーバー。飛行場の規模がツラギもルンガもまだ2ですし、ルーガンビルはまだ1です。本気で攻撃に来られるとなすすべなしかも。とりあえず、Ndeniでサプライを揚陸中のコンボイだけは北に退避させました。
潜水艦はそこそこ活躍してくれていて、ハワイの東方沖でI-19がxAP President Taylorに魚雷を1本命中させました。8410トンと大きな船なので沈むことはないでしょうが、よいニュースではあります。また、連合軍空母の活躍したところよりも南、ヌーメアの南西沖で、RO-64がTK Gulfcoast(7150トン)を撃沈しました。夜の間に2回攻撃したのですが、一回目は2本魚雷を放って1本命中。二回目は6本の魚雷を放って5本命中。一つの船に合計で6本命中することも珍しいでしょうが、一回の攻撃で5本命中させるのはもっと珍しいと思われ、初めての経験です。6本斉射する時には、相手の動きの変化などがあっても命中するように、間隔を広げて発射するものだと思っていました。5本も命中させてしまったということは、かえって艦長の宇野亀雄さん(Naval 57, Agg 61)の発射諸元の計算に問題があったということかもしれませんが、沈めたので良しとしましょう。
