ラングーン上陸船団を援護するため、mini KBにトラックから回航した飛龍を加えて、アンダマン海をパトロールさせていました。主に水上戦闘艦隊の殴り込みが心配だったのですが、予想に反して、昭和17年3月1日、ラングーンをはさんで日英の空母が対峙することになりました。mini KBからは午前と午後の2波、計49機の九七艦攻が英軍機動部隊に向かいました。英軍機動部隊は沿岸ヘクスにいましたが、おそらくPromeから陸上戦闘機(P-39DとP-40E)にもCAPさせるためにここにいたのでしょう。Trackerをみると、護衛のゼロ戦は6機撃墜されましたが、連合軍戦闘機を13機(Fulmar II 3機、Sea Hurricane Ib 7機、P-39D Airacobra 1機、P-40E Warhawk 2機)撃墜しています。護衛戦闘機対CAPのハンディキャップを考えればよくやってくれたと思います。しかし距離8と遠かったため、肝心の九七艦攻はすべて爆装となり、命中弾はゼロでした。がっかり。アンダマン海の空母の戦いというエントリーで紹介した2月18日に続いて、またも長蛇を逸してしまいました。
このコンバットアニメーションで九七艦攻の攻撃した英軍空母はIndomitableだけだったので、英軍機動部隊の空母は一隻だけなんだと思います。その空母一隻の英軍機動部隊はラングーンの船団を攻撃。ラングーンにはモールメンから一式戦がLRCAPしていてFulmar IIを3機撃墜し、FlakでもFulmar IIを1機撃墜しました。しかしLRCAPでは一時にパトロールしている数が少ないのですべては防ぎきれず、Albacoreの雷撃でサプライを揚陸中だったxAKを2隻が撃沈されました。兵員の揚陸が済んでいたことが不幸中の幸いです。ただ、撃沈されたうちの一隻xAK Kosei Maruはexp 51/33と貨物船にしておくのはもったいないほどの練度でした。exp 51あっても揚陸中だと雷撃を避けることができなかったようで、惜しい船を失くしました。
今日も空母の戦いは敗北です。敗因の一つは前回と同様にmini KBの攻撃隊の高度を14000フィートと高く設定してあったことです。これが6000フィートにしてあれば、命中弾があったかもしれません。ただし、距離7以下で攻撃する際には、九九艦爆には急降下爆撃をして欲しいので14000フィートにしてるんですよね。これはまずいんでしょうか。
もう一つは陸攻の参加がなかったことです。英軍機動部隊のいたヘクスはバンコクから距離13ヘクスで、ゼロ戦の護衛付きで陸攻が雷撃できる距離です。しかし、バンコク飛行場の混雑がひどかったのと、アンダマン諸島の南側からニコバル諸島あたりを通過して水上戦闘艦隊が邪魔しにくるほうが心配で、数日前に陸攻をすべてマレー半島中部西岸のVictoria Pointに移動させてあったのです。Victoria Pointから英軍機動部隊までの距離は17で、陸攻隊に設定してあった攻撃距離14ではとどかないので、今日の攻撃には参加しなかったわけです。不運と考えるべきなのか。それとも、連合軍側のSIGINTは有用なので、陸攻隊の移動を察知して攻撃してきたのか。もし後者ならば、相手の方の力量を素直にみとめなければなりませんね。
今日はMedan攻略用部隊をスマトラ島中部東岸のTandjoengbalaiでも、揚陸中の船団がHudson IとSwordfish Iに攻撃され、やはりxAKを2隻撃沈されました。このSwordfish Iは空母からではなく陸上基地からやってきたもののようですが、今日の英連邦軍機は大活躍でした。リプレイの最後にはラングーンを陥落させることができ、なんとか一矢を報いたところです。
