昭和18年1月12日、フィジーの南方にheavy radio trafficが聴取されたとSIGINTに報告がありました。海上での聴取報告の際にはそのヘクスにTFのアイコンがあるのがふつうですが、 今回の報告のヘクス135, 168にはアイコンが表示されていませんでした。こういうのは初めてです。 アイコンが表示されていても、マウスカーソルをあわせてなにか余分の情報が得られるわけではありませんが、ないと気になります。水上艦のTFとは違って潜水艦のTFだとアイコンが表示されない仕様だったりするのでしょうか？西海岸からオーストラリアの前進基地へ数隻まとめて潜水艦を航海させることはあるかもしれませんからね。
今日も潜水艦による被害が2隻ありました。一隻は青ヶ島の南東隣のヘクスで、SC CHa-22がSS Flying Fishに雷撃され沈没。もう一隻はサイパンのはるか南東でPC KayaがSS Harderに雷撃されての沈没です。SC CHa-22の方はコンボイの輸送船をかばって沈没したと考えて納得していますが、PC Kayaはちょっと別。PC Kayaは僚艦のPC Kakiと一緒にサイパンからクエゼリンに向かう途中でした。クエゼリンには、昭和17年12月11日にウエーク島で触雷したCLAA Tatsutaの応急修理がSys 0, Flt 51(51), Eng 1(1)となって終了し、あとは修理ドックでないと修理ができないので本土への回航を計画しました。PC2隻をその護衛にと思ったのですが、早速雷撃されて沈没してしまうとは。応急修理ごとはいえCLAA Tatsutaはあと一本魚雷を喰らえば沈没間違いなしの状態なので、無事本土まで辿り着けるかとても気がかりです。
しっかりsweepしてから爆撃することには気をつけていて、ここ1週間は大きな被害がありませんでした。ところが今日はご覧の通りの惨状で、リプレイを見ながら、sweepの指示を忘れてしまったのかと思ってしまいました。ところが、爆撃機の6波がすべて終わった後、二式戦(Ki-44-IIa Tojo) 56機が2波に分かれて南陽上空に登場しました。18機しかいないP-38が140機の空襲に立ち向かったわけですから、CAPは弾薬切れや燃料切れですでに全機帰還していて、二式戦はむなしく南陽上空をsweepして帰ってきたのでした。
今日一番こっぴどく叩かれた九七重爆の戦隊はこんな感じです。12名もの死傷者(KIA 6、WIA 1、MIA 5)を出して、moraleも53まで低下してしまいました。今日のこの戦隊への指示は、Primary missionをNaval attackに、Secondary missionを地上爆撃としてありました。中国河南省の南陽の近くに連合軍艦船などいるはずがなく、この指示の狙いは地上目標の空襲を午後には実施させることにあります。ふつうにPrimary missionを地上爆撃にすると、午前の空襲になる可能性が高く、そうするとsweepより先に爆撃機が行ってしまうことがあり得るからです。二式戦二個戦隊へのsweepの指示はprimary missionにしてあって、午前のsweepを期待していました。それがよりにもよって午後に、しかも爆撃機より後からのこのこ出向くとは。午前中はよほど天候が悪かったんでしょうかね。
それにしても、この爆撃機よりsweepの戦闘機が後になり得る仕様は本当に不思議です。戦闘機の配備されている飛行場が爆撃機より目標から遠いのならば理解できなくはありませんが、今日の部隊はすべて漢口から。また戦闘機の巡航速度の方が爆撃機より速いはずです。それに、今日の爆撃機の方には護衛の一式戦と空中で合流する手間もあったわけですから、sweeperの方が後になる理由が思い当たりません。CAPのいるところを空襲するつもりなら、日本側は一週間に一度のこの程度の被害なら甘受すべしということなのかも。
