昭和17年1月5日、シアトル・ハワイ航路上をパトロールしているI-1が米軍艦載機に攻撃されました。陸上機の哨戒圈内だと日本の潜水艦はほとんど役に立たず、かえって攻撃目標になるばかりなので、真珠湾から北東へ距離16ヘクスも離れたところでパトロールしているのですが、米軍はCVEを加えたASW TFを編成しているようです。潜水艦に対する航空機からの攻撃はアニメーションを伴いませんが、ブザーの音とともに

と4回も表示されたのでびっくり。リプレイ後に確認してみると、沈没してはいませんでしたが、Sys 61, Flt 44(23), Eng 7(3)と大きなダメージを受けていました。でもなんとかクエゼリンまでは沈没せずに辿り着けるのではないかと思います。潜水艦への航空攻撃は、艦種名だけでなく個艦名まで表示されていると命中しているという噂がありますが、今回のこの4つはいずれも艦種名までで、しかもType J1級と正解していたものはありません。それでも爆弾命中のあり得ることが確認できました。またこの4回の攻撃のうち、何回命中したのか。米軍の哨戒機が携行しているのは500ポンド爆弾と1000ポンド爆弾のうちのどちらでしょう？どちらにしても2発命中したら即沈没となりそうなので、一発なのかなとは思います。
12月31日の桂林上空での一式戦と重爆の大きな被害から約一週間。今日は漢口と武漢から長沙空襲に出かけました。まず午前のフェーズは、武漢から二式戦(Ki-44-IIa Tojo) 62機が4波に分かれて長沙をsweep。今日はP-38G Lightning 12がCAPしていました。数が多いし、武漢から長沙までが3ヘクスなのに対し、P-38Gは9ヘクス離れた重慶からのLRCAPだと思われることをあわせると、楽勝かなと思ったのですが、とんでもない。二式戦の喪失9機に対して、P-38Gの損失数は6機とのことです。ただ、午前の4波のsweepでP-38は一掃され(撃墜された機数は5機だけなので、損傷を受けたり、弾薬を使い果たして帰投したものもあるでしょう)たので、午後の爆撃隊は安泰かなと思いました。
しかし、午後の長沙上空にも新手のP-38G Lightning 7機が待ち構えていました。漢口からの爆撃隊は一式戦54機(Ki-43-Ic Oscar 18、Ki-43-IIa Oscar 36)に護衛されて、九七重爆(Ki-21-IIa Sally) 68機と百式重爆(Ki-49-IIa Helen) 67機が4波に分かれて向かいました。他の戦線に出撃した機もあるので、この爆撃行の損失数の確実なところは不明ですが、一式戦 7機、九七重爆 5機、百式重爆 3機といったところ。また、Airbase hits 5、Airbase supply hits 2、Runway hits 14と出撃機数のわりには乏しい戦果でCAPに爆撃を妨害されたもようです。P-38G Lightning、おそるべし。
先日、フォーラムにたてられたHow are your top pilots doing.というスレがあります。そこではPBEMプレイヤーが自分のLeading Pilotsの画面を晒しているので、他のPBEMがどんな風に進んでいるのか、その一端がみてとれて興味深いスレです。そこで気付くことですが、日本側のエースのスコアは10機強がせいぜいです。それに対して、連合軍側には20機以上の戦果を挙げているパイロットが希ならずみられます。そして、時期にもよる(遅くなるとP-47などものですが、それら連合軍のエースたちの乗機として目立つのがP-38なのです。このスレではありませんが、昭和17－18年の頃は最も優秀なパイロットをP-38装備の飛行隊に集めて二式戦退治をさせるような連合軍の作戦があることを読んだことがあるくらいです。ちなみにスレ主さんの感想は
だいたいみんな私のと似たような成績だが、日本側プレイヤーが20機以上のエースを持つのは難しいようだ。30機以上のスコアのエースがいる日本側プレイヤーはいるかい？あと、スコアが10機に達した頃からパイロットを生還させ続けるのが難しくなる気がする。10機のハードルを越えた途端に死亡してしまうパイロットが多い。15機を超えると生き残りやすくなるようだが。
エースを育成するのは難しい。とくに、ゼロ戦や第1世代の連合軍戦闘機はそうだ。みんなのアップしたスクリーンショットをみると、デザイナーの意図した通りになっていると感じる。連合軍の第2世代の戦闘機が利用可能になると、撃墜数とパイロットのスキルは急速に上昇する。
日本のエースは本当に優秀なパイロットたちで、彼らにとって1942年は幸せな時期だ。連合軍のエースはもっと優秀な機体に搭乗し、日本のエースほどのスキルを必要としない。私のダブルエースの中には、expもスキルも70くらいしかない人もいる。1942年にスコアを伸ばす連合軍のエースは戦闘機ではなく、主に自軍の飛行場の上空で爆撃機相手に稼いでいる。連合軍が攻勢になると、死亡するエースも出てくるが、より多くのエースが新たに誕生する。日本側はひとたび優秀なパイロットが枯渇すると、新たに登場するエースはいない。
とのことでした。うちの昭和18年1月1日のデータはこんな具合です。素のグランドキャンペーンよりも日本側に有利なRA mod採用のこのPBEMでもトップは12機でした。これを見直してみて、海軍機のパイロットがトップとは意外でした。
