ウエーク島沖海戦


昭和17年12月3日、西海岸・ハワイ航路上、ほぼ中央、アメリカ西海岸から30ヘクスほど東側でSS I-2がAK Carina(VP 12, tonnage 6520)を攻撃しました。夜の攻撃で魚雷を1本命中させ、護衛についていたDE Aldenはかわすことができました。AK Carinaは損傷の結果、1隻でEscort TFにされてしまったようです。昼になって護衛のついていないAK Carinaに魚雷を2本命中させて撃沈しました。昼のフェーズでは、やはり西海岸・ハワイ航路のハワイよりでSS I-172もAK Prince Georges(VP 12, tonnage 6520)を攻撃し、魚雷を一本命中させました。今でも半数近い潜水艦を後方で通商破壊に従事させていますが、緒戦期とは違って雷撃の機会が減っています。コンボイを発見しても護衛艦艇がしっかりしていて雷撃させてもらえないか、または返り討ちに遭うパターンがふえているのです。めずらしく、一日に2隻も攻撃させてもらえて、幸先の良い始まりです。

ところが、リプレイが昼のフェーズになってマップに中部太平洋が表示されたとき、ぞっとしてしまいました。だって日本の機動部隊の3ヘクス北に複数の連合軍TFがいたんですから。ウエーク島上陸作戦が終了して、連合軍の機動部隊がもういなくだっただろうという頃を見計らって機動部隊によるウエーク島空襲をしかけたつもりだったので、唐突にこんな近くに出現されてとてもびっくり。サイパン島出港を潜水艦に発見されてしまっていましたし、また昨日のウエーク島空襲に参加した彗星艦爆が53機で空母3隻分の艦爆数でしたから、与しやすしと見て、積極的に出てきたんでしょうね。ともかく、この距離では決戦は避けられず、このまま大敗したらどうしようと心配で胃が痛くなってしまいました。PBEMで胃が痛くなるくらいですから、私はまったく軍人に向いてはいません。

先手をとったのは日本側で、ゼロ戦(A6M5b Zero)82機の護衛で、九七艦攻71機(B5N1 Kate18、B5N2 Kate 53)、九九艦爆(D3A1 Val)42機、彗星艦爆(D4Y1 Judy)58機が快晴の下、米軍機動部隊上空に達しました。レーダーで20分前に探知されていて、CAPのF4F-4 Wildcat 231機が迎撃しました。CAPの数が護衛戦闘機の3倍近いからだと思うのですが、ゼロ戦よりも艦攻・艦爆の方がたくさん撃墜されてしまいました。それでも果敢に空母に向かって攻撃し、CVワスプを撃沈することができました。その他、CVエンタープライズ、CVヨークタウン、CVホーネット、BBノースカロライナ、BBワシントンに命中弾がありました。

という表示が見られたので、この3隻の大破は間違いなしでしょう。昼のフェースの間に艦船の沈没音が聞かれたので、この3隻のうちの一隻が沈没した可能性があります。

ついで、F4F-4 Wildcat 62機の護衛で、SBD-3 Dauntless 150機とTBF-1 Avenger62機が、豪雨をついて機動部隊上空に来襲。レーダーで31分前に探知し、75機のゼロ戦(A6M5 Zero 20、A6M5b Zero 55)が迎撃しました。CAPと護衛戦闘機の数がほぼ互角なので、それほど多数を撃墜することはできませんでした。CV加賀に1000ポンド爆弾3発、BB榛名とCV翔鶴に2発、CV赤城に1発、そしてCVE大鷹には1000ポンド爆弾1発と魚雷1本が命中しました。CV翔鶴はSys 32, Flt21(9), Eng 16(7)で、飛行機の発着艦ができなくなり、所属機はエニウェトクに緊急着陸しました。CVE大鷹はSys 6, Flt 30(26)で魚雷をくらったにしてはほどほどの被害で飛行機の運用が可能です。CV赤城・加賀もSys 20台ですが飛行機の運用は可能で、CV瑞鶴・飛龍に命中弾はありませんでした。BB榛名にも1000ポンド爆弾2発が命中しましたが、当たり所が良かったのか、Sys 3, Eng 1とかすり傷程度の被害で済んでいます。エンジンの被害は命中の衝撃でどこかのパイプが破損したとかなんでしょうね。200機以上の来襲で、火災も起きずにこの程度の被害で済んだのはラッキーでした。午前中にあと3波、米軍急降下爆撃機・雷撃機がやってきましたが、いずれも護衛戦闘機が付いていなかったので撃退しています。

午後も日本側の攻撃からで、ゼロ戦(A6M5b Zero)58機の護衛で、九七艦(B5N2 Kate) 18機、九九艦爆(D3A1 Val) 30機、彗星艦爆(D4Y1 Judy) 16機が攻撃。午前と違って連合軍機動部隊のヘクスは激しい嵐になっていましたが、レーダーで30分前に探知されていて、CAPのF4F-4 Wildcat 139機が迎撃し、それなりに撃墜されました。生き残った攻撃隊は午前と違ってこんどは護衛空母群に向かいました。5隻のCVEが視認されましたが、米軍はこれらのCVEに戦闘機を満載してCAPさせているんだと思います。戦果はCVE Copaheeに爆弾2発命中、CVE Nassauに爆弾1と魚雷1命中、CVE Altamahaに爆弾2命中。午前の攻撃で艦爆・艦攻の数がかなり少なくなっていますから、この程度の戦果で精一杯というところでしょうか。

午後の連合軍の攻撃は、F4F-4 Wildcat 12機の護衛でSBD-3 Dauntless 22機でした。この数だと、攻撃隊を出撃させることのできる正規空母は1-2隻しか残っていないということなんでしょう。日本機動部隊の上空は午前と違って快晴で、レーダーが30分前に敵機来襲を探知。ゼロ戦44機(A6M5 Zero 6、A6M5b Zero 38)が迎撃して、艦船の被害はありませんでした。それにしても、お互いに艦戦の損失数より艦爆・艦攻の損失数がずっと多いことに驚きます。ゼロ戦は護衛とCAPで150機以上が飛行して損失数15機。それに対して艦爆・艦攻乗りは2-3回出撃したらまず生還は期待できない感じの数字です。

今日の空母戦をまとめると、艦船の被害と飛行機の損失とから、日本側の勝利といえると思います。決して大勝ではありませんが、空母数・搭載飛行機数ともに劣勢で、しかも予期せぬ空母戦でした。また、お互いに最大規模の攻撃隊を繰り出した午前中の天候は、日本艦隊上空が快晴、米軍機動部隊上空は嵐で、これは日本側攻撃隊、特に雷撃機に不利に作用したはずなので、その不利をはねかえして爆弾魚雷をたたき込んでくれた電子の機動部隊将兵はよくやってくれたと思います。勝因を分析してみると、
  1. 日本の空母の直衛に参加していた2隻の天龍級CLAAと10隻の秋月級DDがよくはたらいた。Flakによる撃墜は日本機より米軍機の方が多い。
  2. 空母・天龍級CLAA・秋月級DD搭載のレーダーがきちんと機能した。敵機来襲何分前に探知できたかを比較すると、米軍レーダーに遜色なかった。
  3. 米軍機動部隊の空母にはcordination penaltyがあった。1942年はTFの搭載する飛行機の数が100+rnd(100)を越えるとuncoordinationの確率が2倍になりますが、今日はそれが適用されたのでしょう。午前中の攻撃で、護衛のつかない急降下爆撃機・雷撃機が3波やってきたのがそれだったのだと思います。もしぜんぶがまとまってやってきていたら、この程度の被害では済まなかったでしょう。特に、戦闘機の護衛付きでやってきた攻撃隊には15機しか雷撃機がいなかったので、とてもラッキーでした。
というところだと思います。1、2の要因はRA modをつかっているからですし、彗星艦爆やゼロ戦52型が速く使えるのもRA modのおかげですから、素のGCだったらこうはいかなかったでしょうね。さてこの後どうするか。こちらには飛行機の運用が可能な空母が5隻に対して、連合軍は正規空母1-2隻とCVE2-3隻ですからすぐにも追撃したいところ。でもウエーク島周辺の連合軍艦隊の構成をみると、空母を含んだTF以外に水上艦のTFもいます。これらが突っ込んできて日本の機動部隊と乱戦となったりするといやです。なので、空母はすべて南西に退避し、日本側のBB武蔵、榛名、霧島をまとめて水上戦闘TFに仕立てて追撃してみることにしました。連合軍側が撤退してくれるなら、あとは機動部隊で予定のウエーク島空襲を行うつもりです。ウエーク島には昨日はいなかった戦闘機22機、爆撃機76機の存在が報告されています。これら緊急着陸した飛行機は近くに飛んで行ける場所がないと思うので、できればぜんぶ破壊したいものです。

陸戦フェーズでは久しぶりに中国軍に攻撃されました。場所は柳州です。ここは華南にしては珍しく森林ではないヘクスなので、奪取できないかと兵力を集中し、広東から爆撃を加えていました。10月29日に日本側から攻撃しましたが、オッズ比1対5で大敗してしまった経緯があります。ここは週一回しかサプライが輸送されてこない、辺鄙なヘクスです。なのでここで攻勢をとるには、広東や香港につながる道路上にある根拠地の飛行場を拡張して、サプライの流れを良くしてやらないとダメなんだろうと思います。攻略は難しいと判断して、攻勢のために集めた第一と第二の機甲師団はほかに転用し、歩兵師団と交代させるつもりでいるところでした。そこに今回の攻撃です。素のAVは日本側2566に対して、中国側9102と大差。でも今回の戦闘の修正AVは2664対1083と日本側に有利で、オッズ比2対1で撃退できました。死傷者は日本側5491名、中国側14647名と日本側の方がずっと少ないのですが、中国軍の被害はdisabledがほとんどで、destroyedになったdevice数は日本側377、中国側178とだいぶ不利なスコアでした。まあ、サプライ不足で中国側は再建に時間がかかるでしょうから、よしとしましょう。まあ、なかなか良い日でした。

追記:さきほど、リプレイを見てショックを受けたからPBEMセーブファイルの返送はあしたにするというメールが届きました。CVワスプだけではなく、やはりもう一隻正規空母が沈んだのかもしれません。それでも、8月の南太平洋海戦で、CV隼鷹・飛鷹・蒼龍・日進・祥鳳・瑞鳳の6隻を一挙に失った日本側に比べればずっとましだと思うんですけどね。1943年になれば、エセックス級が続々と就役するでしょうし。

おめでとうございます!

米軍は、戦闘機の約80%をCAPに回しているように見えます。そういう小賢しいことをすると不思議とダメなんですよね。

でも日本側からみると、ぜいたくでうらやましくもあります。
