ウエーク島奪還ならず


昭和17年12月11日、ウエーク島上陸船団がウエーク島のヘクスに到着しました。PTボートはもういないのかと思ったのですが、昨日ゼロ戦の機銃掃射で撃沈したと思ったものが沈んでいなかったようで、まだ5隻ほど残っていました。Moonlight 14%の夜で視程3000ヤード。お互いに2000ヤードで視認して、雷撃と砲撃が始まりました。さいわいなことに魚雷は命中せず。PTボート2隻を撃沈できました。その後、船団は機雷原に遭遇し、触雷してCLAA龍田に火災が発生しました。

昨日、ウエーク島から距離4ヘクスのところに発見された連合軍のTFですが、夜のうちにBB比叡・日向の追撃部隊が接触に成功しました。3日のウエーク島沖海戦で傷つき、逃げ遅れていた大物を期待していたのですが、みつかったのはACM2隻でした。鶏を割くのに牛刀をもってするの類いで、戦艦が出るまででもなかった相手ですので、あっさり2隻とも撃沈してしまいました。

上陸船団の方は DMSが掃海作業を行っていましたが、CLAA龍田がもう一回触雷。ACM2隻を配置してあったということは機雷も300個近く敷設してあるのかもしれませんが、龍田はどうもついていない艦です。2回の触雷で被害はSys 28, Flt 67(51), Eng 1(1)にもなりましたが、2回も触雷して浮いていられる軽巡を建造した佐世保工廠をほめるべきなんでしょう。ところで、2回も触雷したことでコンバットリポートにある

14個の機雷を処理したというこの報告が気になってしまいました。この14はDMSが14個処理したということなんでしょうか。それともDMSが13個処理して、CLAA龍田が身を挺して1個処理したということなんでしょうか。まあ、どっちでも大勢には影響しませんが。呉第6特別陸戦隊と横須賀第7特別陸戦隊の上陸の方は夜のうちに無事に済みましたが、prepが3しかないので合計で歩兵30分隊がdisabeldになってしまいました。これは昼になってからの陸戦に大きく影響することになります。

明るくなってからウエーク島のヘクスにいるPTボート3隻に、ゼロ戦(A6M5b Zero)40機が昨日と同じく高度100フィートからの攻撃を行いました。昨日は爆弾がまったく命中しませんでした。しかし今日はPTボート3隻が
PT-68 dead in the water ...
という状態、つまり燃料切れで漂流している状態で、回避運動を行えなかったためでしょう、機銃だけではなく5発の爆弾が命中して2隻を撃沈しました。

目を転じてビルマ戦線。今はHRで夜間空襲が禁止の時期です。連合軍のビルマへの空襲は、日本側の複数の飛行場からのCAPが連携していて守りの固いビルマ中部のマグエ、マンダレーなどを避けて行われています。このビルマ中部の飛行場群以外の根拠地を真剣に空襲から守ろうとすると、CAP用の戦闘機が分散することになり、各個撃破されてしまうことになるだろうと考えていて、常時CAPを挙げてはいません。CAPがいないので連合軍側は安心して出撃し、12月7日と9日には北部のミートキーナを、10日は南部のKathaを爆撃しました。そろそろ東部のラシオにやって来る頃かなと思い、今日はラシオ上空に二式複戦(Ki-45 KAIa Nick) 36機にCAPを指示してありました。ミートキーナやKathaではなくラシオで待ち伏せ作戦を行ったのは、印緬国境から遠く、貴重なP-38以外の戦闘機は護衛につきにくい場所だからです。

予想通り、連合軍の爆撃機148機(Blenheim IV 33、Blenheim VD x 16、Liberator II 5、Wellington Ic 7、B-17E Fortress 26、B-24D Liberator 35、Hudson IIIa 12、B-25C Mitchell 26)が5波に分かれて来襲しました。armor 1の二式複戦は対爆撃機戦闘が単発機より得意なのでしょうか、待ち伏せ作戦は予想以上に成功して、連合軍機43機の損失が報告されています。航続距離の関係で比較的ラシオに近い基地から発進したと思われる双発機の損失がほとんどで、遠くから来る四発機はあとから、つまりCAPの数が減ってから来襲することになったので、Wellington Ic 5機(調べてみたらウエリントンは双発でした)、Liberator II 2機だけでした。それに対して二式複戦の損失は0機で、エースが1名誕生しました。定数36機の部隊にCAP 50%を指示してあったのですが、一日で29名のパイロットのexpが上昇していたので、ほぼ全機出撃したようです。ただこれだけCAPがうまくやっても、ラシオの滑走路は89、サービス施設は74のダメージを受けてしばらくは使用不能です。

最後に本日のメインイベント、ウエーク島に上陸した陸戦隊2個と米軍部隊の戦闘がありました。予想通り、米軍は戦闘部隊ではなく、106th USN Base Forceと75th Coast AA Regimentが守っていました。素のAVは日本側32,連合軍側11で、修正後AVは9対9、オッズ比1対1となり、ウエーク島奪還はなりませんでした。foritificationを1から0に減少させのが今日の主な戦果です。ただし、戦闘による損失はわずかで、二つの陸戦隊の戦闘後のDisruptionは11と17、Ftaigueも3と8でまあまあの値です。数日戦闘をせず、disabledになった歩兵分隊の回復を待ち、その間は爆撃で米軍のDisruptionとFtaigueの回復を妨害しておいてから戦闘を再開すれば、この兵力でもウエーク島を落とせるだろうと思います。過去、ダーウィンやルーガンビルを攻略したときもそんな感じでしたから。でも時間をかけると、周囲に監視用のTFを貼り付けておく必要もあり、潜水艦による被害も心配です。3日後くらいには上陸できる地点までトラックから14師団/Cを載せた船団がきていますから、それでさくっと占領しちゃった方がいいでしょうね。
