飛行隊が任務を遂行する際には、飛行距離が戦果に影響します。他の飛行場への移動・フェリー任務を除き、ふつうの任務の際につかわれる飛行距離にはnormal rangeとextended rangeの2種類があります。マニュアルにこの二つのrangeの定義が載せられているかなと思って調べてみたのですが、みつかりません。私なりの理解をまとめてみると、normal rangeは文字通りnormalで、任務の遂行にペナルティの発生しない距離。extended rangeは増槽をつけたり、爆弾搭載量を減らしたりなどで作戦距離を伸ばしているということで、
- 目標を発見できない可能性が高くなる
- 燃料不足により、引き返してしまう可能性が高くなる
- 燃料不足により、空戦の回数が減ることがある
- 空戦により発生するdisruption値が大きくなる
- 爆撃機の搭載する爆弾の数が少なくなったり、爆弾の大きさが小さくなったりする
- 水平爆撃機は、規定の規模=4 + (Max load of aircraft / 6500)より小さな飛行場からはextended rangeで出撃できない(規定の規模より小さな飛行場からはnormal rangeでもextended rangeの爆弾搭載量になる)
などのペナルティが発生します。陸上の飛行場に配備された飛行隊は、exetended rangeより遠いところを攻撃の目標として設定することができません。上記のようにextended range自体が、増槽や爆弾搭載量の減少でようやく実現している距離ですから妥当な仕様です。しかし、空母に搭載されている飛行隊はexetended rangeより遠いところを攻撃の目的地として設定することが可能です。どうしてそういう仕様になっているかというと、空母機動部隊による奇襲を可能にするためだと思います。
extended range制限に縛られているすると、目標のextended range内まで接近してから攻撃指示を出すことになってしまいます。目標としたい重要な根拠地周辺には相手も哨戒機を飛ばしていることが多いので、相手にみつかってから攻撃指示を出すことになり、奇襲にはなりません。しかし、空母機動部隊は指示出しの時点でのextended range制限がないので、攻撃の前日またはそれ以前に攻撃指示を出すことができます。哨戒圏外にいるうちに攻撃指示を出し、哨戒圈・extended range内に移動して攻撃して、攻撃を終えたらすぐ哨戒圏外に待避することで、奇襲が実施可能なわけです。
昭和17年12月2日、一昨日サイパンを出発した機動部隊から彗星艦爆53機(D4Y1 Judy)がウエーク島空襲を実施しました。距離12ヘクスとextended rangeでの攻撃だったので、250kg爆弾を一つしか搭載できませんでした。1000-3000フィートまで急降下しての投弾でもはずしてしまうパイロットもいて、Airbase hits 3、Airbase supply hits 5、Runway hits 26の戦果でした。急降下爆撃機は低空まで降下するので対空砲火の影響が大きく、Flakで3機、Ops loss 1機の損失でした。
ながながと、空母艦載機にはextended rangeでの攻撃指示が可能なことを述べた後で彗星の攻撃を紹介したのは、今日の空襲が意図したものではなかったからです。攻撃に参加した艦爆隊にはこんな感じにウエーク島飛行場爆撃を指示してありました。現在の日本の機動部隊には彗星への機種転換がまだで九九艦爆を装備したままの部隊がいます。航続距離の短いそれらの九九艦爆や、九七艦攻装備の部隊と一緒にまとまって空襲させようと考え、Maximum Rangeを8に制限してありました。なので、距離12ヘクスの今日の時点で空襲するのは想定外だったわけです。またTarget: Wake Island (12)となっていますが、この(12)はウエーク島への距離を示す数字です。昨日この指示を出した時には20ヘクス離れていたので、(20)でした。
いったい12ヘクス離れた目標に対する攻撃がMaximum Range 8という指示を無視して行われてしまうのは仕様なんでしょうか？Maximum Rangeで制限できるのはPrimary MissionのNaval Attackの方だけで、Secondary Missionはそうではないのか？などとても不思議に感じて、マニュアルをみてみると154ページに
Maximum Rangeは、飛行隊が目標に到達するために飛行する最大の距離をヘクス数で設定するものだ。目標の選択を指揮官に任せた際、任務が攻撃であろうと、護衛であろうと、LRCAPであろうと、飛行隊はこのMaximum Rangeを超える目標を選ぶことはない。しかし、プレイヤーによって特定の目標(根拠地、TF)が指示されている場合、飛行隊はこのMaximum Range制限を無視する。
と書かれていました。かつて一度はマニュアルにざっと目を通したつもりですが、こういうルールになっているとは知りませんでした。護衛を指示された戦闘機隊がどの爆撃隊を護衛するのか決めるのは指揮官に任されているので、このルールによるとMaximum Range制限が適用されます。たしかにゼロ戦隊のMaximum Rangeも8に設定してあったので、今日はゼロ戦が一機も護衛についていませんでした。CAPがいなかったから問題にはなりませんでしたが、CAPがいる根拠地への空襲であれば、ルールの無知から大惨事をまねくところでした。
