潜望鏡から観察できる正規空母って大きいですよね。昭和17年12月1日のリプレイはこのぞっとする光景から始まりました。1942年の米海軍の艦隊型潜水艦の魚雷の不発率はまだ80%なので、CV翔鶴に命中した魚雷も不発でした。翔鶴は僚艦の瑞鶴や赤城・加賀などとともにウエーク島の空襲に出かけるところでしたが、SS Tritonに目撃されて意図がばれてしまったでしょう。でも、いまのところウエーク島には戦闘機がいないので、飛行場がしっかりしないうちに叩いておきたと思います。
11月3日のサラモア陥落に伴い、連合艦隊主力の在泊地をトラックからサイパンに後退させたことは以前のエントリーで書きました。後退させた理由は、サラモアからトラックを偵察されてしまうと空母など主力艦の所在地が連合軍に明らかになってしまうこと、また万が一の港湾爆撃を危惧してのことでした。その後、トラック上空で連合軍偵察機を目撃したという報告はありません。しかし連合軍はトラックからサイパンへの移動をご承知のようです。というのも、以前はトラック周辺にたくさんみかけた潜水艦の姿が見えなくなり、最近はサイパン周辺で多数がパトロール(機動部隊がウエーク島に接近しないか哨戒線をはっていたんでしょう)しているからです。連合軍の優秀なIntelをもってすれば、日本側の動きは手に取るように分かってしまうんでしょうね。
その後、ニューギニア島南岸のMeraukeにBB山城とCL川内が艦砲射撃を実施しました。ここが増強されると、ダーウィンやホーランディアが圧迫されることになるので、飛行場の拡張を少しでも遅らせる意図での艦砲射撃でした。山城の艦載水偵が弾着観測をして、死傷者126名とAirbase hits 7、Airbase supply hits 4、Runway hits 16、Port hits 11、Port supply hits 2の命中弾を得ています。今日の偵察では飛行場に70%、港に32%のダメージが残っているとの報告なので、それなりの損害を与えることができたようです。11月28日のTerapo艦砲射撃の後、お相手の方から次はMeraukeに艦砲射撃に来るんだろうと言われてしまいました。でも、すでに進撃中でしたし、中止するのもなんなので決行しましたが、Meraukeのヘクスで哨戒中だった潜水艦にも妨害されず、無事済んで良かったと思います。
中国では九七重爆(Ki-21-IIa Sally) 100機と百式重爆(Ki-49-IIa Helen) 50機が一式戦(Ki-43-Ic Oscar 27、Ki-43-IIa Oscar 36)61機の護衛で漢口から重慶の爆撃に向かいました。中国の空は日本陸軍が支配していて、長沙など漢口の周辺を空襲するには迎撃の心配もほぼありません。しかし今日は重慶という奥地にある中華民国の首都の爆撃ですから、漢口配備の一式戦全機に護衛を指示してありました。10月25日 、11月8日、19日にはCAPのいなかった重慶上空ですが、今日は久しぶりに41機(P-43A-1 Lancer 5、P-66 Vanguard 8、P-38F Lightning 12、P-38G Lightning 16)のCAPが待ち伏せしていました。連日の偵察でも重慶の飛行場のダメージは50%以上をキープしていて、重慶自体には戦闘機がいないことを確認してあるので、成都からのLRCAPだと思われます。
前回8月7日の重慶上空待ち伏せCAPには勝利した一式戦ですが、米軍のP-38まで投入された今回のCAPにはかないません。また空襲が4波に分かれて、爆撃機だけで突っ込んでしまった部隊もあったので、さらに被害が大きくなりました。結局、一式戦9機 (Ki-43-Ic Oscar 3、Ki-43-IIa Oscar 6)、九七重爆32機、百式重爆11機の損失で、戦果はAirbase hits 4とRunway hits 24だけでした。CAPの側の損失は合計で7機とごくわずかで完敗です。また、護衛がつかずにCAPに襲われた重爆2機種の機数はほぼ同じでしたが、損失になった機数に3倍の差がついています。これは、九七重爆のarmorが0なのに対し、百式重爆の方はarmor 1という防御力との違いがきいているんでしょう。今日はその他の戦線も含めると、一日で57機の損失でした。
