昭和17年11月25日、紀伊水道を通過中の駆逐艦4隻が機雷原を発見し、7個の機雷を処理しました。その後、貨物船を護衛しているPB Hakkai Maruも機雷を発見して1個を処理。瀬戸内海の出口に機雷を敷設するとは大胆不敵な行動です。呉から南方へ出かける時には、豊後水道を通過するか、もっと貴重な船団であれば関門海峡から東シナ海・南シナ海の浅海ヘクスを選んで航海させることが多く、紀伊水道を通過するのは久しぶりです。もしかするとこの紀伊水道の機雷も、大島のヘクスに敷設された機雷で大きな被害のでた11月11日に敷設されたものかも知れません。豊後水道はそれなりにつかうので、AMcに掃海パトロールさせていますが、紀伊水道の監視は疎かになっていました。
実は駆逐艦漣・朝霧・綾波・春月の方のTFには、空母翔鶴・瑞鶴、重巡利根・最上が含まれていました。翔鶴・瑞鶴ともだいぶ前に修理が済んでいましたが、九九艦爆から彗星への機種転換を本土で済ませてからトラックへ向かわせれば、トラックのサプライをつかわずに機種転換できるかなと思って、修理を行った長崎・神戸においてありました。ところが連合軍のウエーク攻略の気配にあわてて神戸に集合し、最近竣工した秋月級駆逐艦と合流してから南方へ向かうため、横須賀に向かう途中だったのです。空母が触雷などということにならず本当にラッキーでした。
その後、定期便となりつつある夜間空襲がありました。ビルマではTaung Gyiに、8波 68機の爆撃機(Liberator II 4機、B-17E Fortress 20機、B-24D Liberator 29機、B-25C Mitchell 15機)が来襲しました。二式戦(Ki-44-IIa Tojo)16機が迎撃しましたが、空戦で10機の損失。飛行場にはAirbase hits 9、Airbase supply hits 9、Runway hits 44の命中弾があり、駐機中の機体19機も地上で破壊されてしまいました。
ニューギニアでは、ホーランディアに8波54機の爆撃機(B-17E Fortress 17機、B-17F Fortress 8機、B-24D Liberator 29機)が来襲しました。一式戦(Ki-43-IIa Oscar)22機が迎撃しましたが、空戦で8機の損失。飛行場にはAirbase hits 3、Runway hits 8の命中弾があり、駐機中の機体7機も地上で破壊されてしまいました。
そのほかいろいろと戦闘があり、リプレイ後にマップをみてみると、こんなところに連合軍機動部隊の姿がありました。いまごろウエーク島ではNaval SupportやAviation Supportを含んだ部隊やが上陸中で、入れ替わりに昨日強襲上陸を行った部隊が輸送船への乗船中でしょう。この連合軍機動部隊はウエークの輸送船団が日本の艦隊に襲撃されないよう、トラックやマリアナ諸島とウエーク島の間に立ちはだかっているのかなと思われます。でもトラックやマリアナ諸島への空襲を意図していないと断定はできません。上述したように、日本の空母のうち赤城と加賀はサイパンにいますが、残りの4隻はまだ横須賀です。もし連合軍機動部隊に空襲されたら基地航空隊だけで守ることになり、在泊艦艇の被害はゼロにはできません。そう考えて、トラックやサイパンにいた艦船は出航させ、西方に避難させました。
