昭和17年11月16日、ニューギニア島中部北岸のアイタペに、ポートモレスビーからB-17E Fortress 21機とB-17F Fortress 24機が3波に分かれて港湾爆撃にやってきました。ニューギニア戦線での連合軍の空襲は、ここしばらくワウ、マダンなどの東部の根拠地に対するものばかりでしたが、久しぶりに遠出してきたことになります。ニューギニアへのサプライをマダンなど東部の港に輸送すると陸揚げ中に空襲されて船を沈められてしまいます。やむを得ず、このところアイタペあたりに陸揚げするようにしていたので、アイタペ港の施設を破壊するための空襲を企図したのだと思われます。
アイタペには飛行機を配置してありませんが、ホーランディアには定数36機のゼロ戦(A6M3b Zero、RA modオリジナルの機種)を装備する千歳空S-1と45機の252空S-1がいます。ともにCAP 30%、Maximum Range 3を指示してあり、アイタペとホーランディアの距離は3ヘクスなので、ホーランディアのゼロ戦がB-17を迎撃しました。アイタペにはレーダーがなく、目視で6分、3分、2分前の探知ですから、空中でパトロールしていた9機だけが迎撃しました。スコアを確認してみるとゼロ戦は8機(A2Aで6機、Ops loss2機)損失に対して、B-17F FortressはA2Aで1機損失で8対1と惨敗。これはゼロ戦がだめというよりも9対45という数的劣勢が影響しているはずで、迎撃する戦闘機の数の方が多ければ、それなりに撃墜できたでしょう。パイロットの死傷はKIA 1名とWIA 2名。Port hits 6、Port supply hits 1で、今日のアイタペ港にはダメージ13が残っていました。
もしこれからもアイタペ空襲が続くようなら、ホーランディアの部隊にアイタペ上空へのLRCAPを指示するのも一策ではあります。しかしLRCAPは疲れがたまりやすく、もし実施するとしても輸送船が入港している日だけというような感じじゃないと無理です。また、LRCAPにすると、本拠地のホーランディアへの空襲に対する備えが疎かになってしまいますから。連合軍側としては有利なスコアを残せるにしても、機体の損傷で出撃間隔が空いてしまうことを考えれば、CAPとの戦闘がない方がうれしいでしょう。CAPをさせないためにはsweepで削っておくことが非常に有効です。アイタペをsweepするには、Terapoが距離9ヘクスで、今日陥落したワウが距離8ヘクス。航続距離の長いP-38の数が潤沢にあるようなら、こういったところに配備してsweepさせるのが非常に有効。ソロモン・ニューギニアの空は連合軍が優勢でも、ビルマ戦線の方は苦しいと感じているようで、P-38はこれまでインドの飛行場に優先的に配備されているように見受けます。もしこれらをニューギニアに転用してくれるようなら大歓迎。船での輸送にはかなりの日数がかかるでしょうから。
陸戦フェーズでは4回目の攻撃でワウが陥落しました。アメリカの3個師団を相手に、サラモア戦で敗れて撤退してきた1個聯隊と4個陸戦隊が10日間頑張ってくれたのですから、敢闘を讃えたいと思います。撤退先は東隣のヘクスのラエか、または北東のヘクスのNadzbのどちらになるのかなと思っていましたが、ラエでした。そのままラエで頑張っていると、ワウの米軍はラエを無視してNadzbを通ってマダンの方へいってしまいそうな気がします。なので、ラエに撤退した部隊はNadzbに移動させることにしました。
