昭和17年11月3日、Ndeniに艦砲射撃がありました。Airbase hits 4、Airbase supply hits 4、Runway hits 10、Port hits 14、Port supply hits 5の命中弾があり、滑走路ダメージ 98、飛行場施設のダメージ 100、港の施設ダメージ 38となりました。ここNdeniに二式大艇を配備して西海岸・オーストラリア航路を監視させると、西海岸・オーストラリア航路を南に迂回させる効果がありました。しかし、ルーガンビルからB-26による爆撃が連日のようにあって、すでに滑走路ダメージ、飛行場施設のダメージともにほぼ100になってしまっていました。
飛行艇は爆撃で破壊されにくい印象をもっていて、フォーラムで見かけたFlying Boatsというスレでもそれが話題になっていました。しかし、飛行場のダメージが100に近くなると地上で破壊されやすくなってしまうとのことで、やはり私も同じ経験をしています。飛行場のダメージが100でも飛行艇は哨戒飛行に出発することができますが、この地上での破壊が無視できないので、先月後半に二式大艇はNdeniから撤退させました。
というわけで、これまでにも100近くあった飛行場のダメージに、艦砲射撃で港の施設ダメージ38が加わってもそれほどの痛痒は感じません。ただ痛いのは6372トン備蓄してあったサプライが2000トンちかく燃やされて、4462トンにまで減ってしまったことです。爆撃で燃やされる分だけなら九七大艇で輸送して補充することもできるのですが、2000トンは貨物船でない補充できません。でもNdeniにコンボイを送り込むことは無理です。今日の艦砲射撃の結果をみて、Ndeniに駐屯している特別陸戦隊2個を撤退させる決心がつきました。Fasttransport TFによるpick upでも危険すぎるので、九七大艇輸送機型で空路転進させようと思います。
ところで、今日の艦砲射撃にはBC Repulseが参加していました。レパルスには昭和16年12月7日(アメリカ製なのでこのゲームの開戦日)に九六陸攻が1本、一式陸攻が2本の魚雷を命中させたと報告されています。魚雷3本では沈没しなかったんですね。排水量3万5000トンあまりのレパルスは、シドニーやコロンボでは修理できなかったはずなので、ハワイかアメリカまで修理に行ったのでしょう。今日の艦砲射撃は、修理完了を記念して日本側に顔見せする意味もこめた作戦だったんだろうと思います。
前日に引き続いて、ニューギニア島東部のサラモアには激しい空爆に引き続いて陸戦がありました。修正AV値823対109、オッズ比7対1でfortification level 3ですから、サラモアは陥落してしまいました。5465名のうち死傷者2628名と大きな被害を出しましたが、破壊されてしまった部隊はなくすべて撤退できました。意外だったのはラエに撤退したことです。ワウに撤退するものだとばかり思っていましたが、サラモア・ラエ間のヘクスサイドも陸地が含まれていたんですね。連合軍は次にはワウ攻略を狙って来るのでしょう。またサラモアの部隊も一休みしたあと、ラエに向かうのでしょう。
サラモア失陥の意味ですが、ニューギニア東部を制圧するための大きな飛行場や港の建設用地を確保するという点を連合軍は重視してないでしょう。その目的なら、ブナやポートモレスビーやTerapoだけでも充分過ぎるはずです。それよりも、トラックからの距離23ヘクスという点にサラモアの価値はあるだろうと思うのです。サラモアはこれまでに連合軍が占領したうちで、もっともトラックに近い根拠地です。連合軍が現在運用中の四発爆撃機Liberatorの航続距離は24ありますから、これをサラモアに配備すれば、トラックまで届くわけです。多数集めての爆撃はそれほど現実的ではないとしても、偵察でトラックの在泊艦船を覗かれるのが困ります。水平爆撃機で偵察しても、専門の偵察機ほどの情報は得られませんが、それでも万が一ということもありえます。航続距離26の偵察機を連合軍が入手するのは1943年4月以降ですが、空母や戦艦の所在地は可能な限り秘匿しておきたいと思うので、主力艦はトラックからサイパンに後退させることにしました。
