予想通り、Mandalayに2波の空襲がありました。レーダーが37分と44分前に探知したので、2ヘクス離れていますが、それぞれ52機と36機が迎撃しました。リポートによると、2回の戦闘でKi-44-IIa Tojoが5機、Ki-45 KAIa Nickが2機撃墜され、P-38G Lightningを1機撃墜できただけです。日本側は2ヘクス離れたTaung Gyiに、連合軍側はDaccaやSilcharなど7~8ヘクス離れた飛行場に戻らなければなりませんから、帰投中や着陸時に失われる機体もあるはずです。Trackerで確認するとKi-44-IIa Tojoの損失は11機、Ki-45 KAIa Nickは5機。Tojoの今日の出撃はここだけなので、すべてこのCAP時の被害です。それに対して連合軍側の損失は、P-38G Lightningが5機、 B-17E Fortressが2機、B-17F Fortressが1機などで合計10機弱でした。
CAP側の被害の多さばかりが目に付きます。機体はまた生産すればいいのですが、パイロットもKIA 5名、WIA 6名。相手のパイロットも少なからず死傷していると考えて、爆撃し放題にはさせておかずに、迎撃を続けるべきなんでしょうか。続けるべきだとしても機体の補充やmoraleとfatigueの回復が必要なので、毎日は無理だな。
ラシオに向かっていた中国軍部隊は数日前から撤退し始めています。そもそも何が目的でこちらに向かってきたのか、またなぜ撤退することにしたのかが全く不明ですが、とりあえずラシオ方面は安泰。しかし、今日からアキャブに連合軍機が見られるようになりました。そして、Cox’s Bazarの英軍部隊がアキャブ方面に移動を始めました。ビルマ中部は爆撃されても今のところそれほど痛くは感じないのですが、アキャブに多数の連合軍機に居座られるとラングーンが爆撃圏内に入ってしまうので困ったところ。どうしたもんでしょう。
