空戦アニメのアステリスクの意味

昭和17年5月22日、オーストラリア東岸ニューキャッスル沖でI-170がDE Hatfieldを雷撃して撃沈しました。日本の潜水艦がASW TFの艦艇、それも駆逐艦に魚雷を命中させるのは珍しいことです。
今日のメインイベントは夜が明けて、ポートモレスビーからラバウルへ24機のB-17Eの爆撃でした。ラバウルにはレーダーがあります。”Raid detected at 35 NM, estimated altitude 9,000 feet. Estimated time to target is 10 minutes”と報告されていて、レーダーで探知できたのはたしかで、また高度も実際には7000フィートだったのでまあまあ正しい報告です。ただし、敵機来襲まで10分では目視による探知とあまり変わらず、この時期の日本のレーダーはまだまだ役に立たない感じですね。
まとまった数のB-17Eの昼間の爆撃にCAPが正面切って挑んだのはこのゲームではこれが初めてだと思うので、早送りせずリプレイを見てみました。CAPのゼロ戦もかなりの数が損傷し、また合計で3機が撃墜されていますが、B-17Eにもそれなりにダメージを与えていました。見ながら気になったのが、アニメ画面の報告文の冒頭にあるアステリスクです。コンバットアニメでアステリスクが5個も並んでいるのは珍しいと感じたのです。
このアステリスクは何を意味しているのでしょうか?このゲームには厚さが15mmほどの立派なマニュアルが付属していますが、その分厚いマニュアルにも記載されていない事項がたくさんあります。このアステリスクもその一つです。アステリスクはゲーム中のいろんなところで使用されていますが、これと似たタイプは対潜艦艇が爆雷攻撃している時のアニメで、爆雷がnear missしたという報告文の冒頭に付されているのをよくみかけます。対潜戦闘のアステリスクの意味についてもマニュアルには記載がなかったと思いますが、付されたアステリスクの数は爆雷と敵潜水艦との距離を表している、近いほどアステリスクの数が多いんだという発言をどこかのスレで読んだ記憶があります。コンバットアニメを何度もみた経験から、これはたしかにそうらしいと私も感じています。ただ、爆雷戦で付されるアステリスクの数は1~4個で5個はみた記憶がありません。
空戦のアステリスクは、機関砲弾が敵機の機体のどのくらい近くで炸裂したということでしょうか?そうだとすると、この5個のアステリスクをもっと頻繁にみかけてもいいような気がします。1~3個はよくみかけますが、5個はね。そこで私が想像したのは、このアステリスクの数は敵機に与えたダメージの大きさなのではということです。戦闘機どうしの戦闘や、日本の爆撃機が連合軍戦闘機に攻撃される戦闘では、被攻撃機のdurabilityが低いので、アステリスクを5個も表示するダメージだと、damagedではなく、一発でdestroyedになってしまう。それに対して、四発爆撃機は丈夫なので、20mm機関砲弾がもっとも効果的に命中・炸裂した場合でもdamagedで済むので5個のアステリスクが付されることがあるのかなと。どうでしょうかね。
今回のラバウル空襲ではCAPのA6M2にA2Aで3機、Ops lossで4機の損失を受けました。ただ、味方飛行場の上空での戦闘だったので、パイロットの死傷者数はKIA 3名、WIA 1名の合計3名で済みました。相手のB-17Eの今日の損失機数は9機と報告されていますから、来襲した24機の37%ほどになり、CAPが健闘した戦いだったと言えると思います。flakで一機落ちているのは、CAPがダメージを与えた機体に高射砲弾が命中して合わせ技で落ちたんでしょう、きっと。しかし、それにしても、激しい迎撃を受けながらAirbase hits 7、Airbase supply hits 2、Runway hits 29としっかり飛行場に命中弾を残してゆくのが四発爆撃機の怖ろしいところ。地味に痛いのが地上にあった機体の損失で、合計13機も破壊されてしまいました。engineerによる修理作業後でも飛行場には整備施設に14、滑走路に15のダメージが残っています。この規模の空襲を連日続ける体力が連合軍にあれば、早晩ラバウルも引き払わなければならないほどの空襲被害です。でも、まだ昭和17年5月ですから、一回にこれだけの四発爆撃機の損失を出す空襲を休まずに続けることはできなかろうと期待したいところです。かえって3-4日おきなら、こういった空襲を続けてもらった方がB-17を撃墜できるので、夜間の嫌がらせ空襲をされるよりはありがたいと感じます。
ルソン島以外のフィリピン平定はだいぶ前に済んだのですが、ルソン島だけはクラークフィールドとバターンに連合軍側の根拠地が残っています。今日は何度目かになるクラークフィールドでの総攻撃を行いましたが、修正AVが日本側853対連合軍側925と跳ね返されてしまいました。できれば5月中にはクラークフィールドを落として、6月中には全フィリピンの解放を宣言したいところです。
