昨日発見した硫黄島近海の連合軍TFですが、哨戒機の報告通りAGばかりで、数は3隻ではなく4隻(4隻ということは黒船を想起させます)でした。横須賀からトラックに回航中のCVL日進とBB比叡をエスコートしていたCL能代とDD夕暮をこの連合軍TFの迎撃に分派し、またトラックから呉に戻る輸送船をエスコートしていたDD朝風も捜索に向かわせました。CL能代とDD夕暮は昭和17年6月1日の夜間に2回、接触に成功してダメージを与えました。夜が明けてからDD朝風が接触し、AG ArcticとAG Sagadahocを撃沈しました。リプレイ中にもう一隻の沈没音が聞こえたので、AG Regulusも沈没したものと思われます。
今日は硫黄島東方に一隻だけの連合軍TFの存在が報告されていて、昨夜砲弾が一発しか命中しなかったAG Kansanだと思われます。 しかし、しっかり哨戒機が発見しているにもかかわらず、サイパンの陸攻も横須賀の大艇も攻撃に飛んでくれませんでした。この日の戦闘の感想としては、軽巡ふくめた軍艦が3回も攻撃したのに4隻全部を沈没させるのは難しいものなのかなというのが一つ。また、相手の存在が分かっているのに、艦船攻撃任務に飛んでくれないことってやはりあるなというのがもう一つでした。
