昭和17年10月8日、ビルマ北部のミートキーナに5波99機の爆撃があり、滑走路に43発、飛行場施設に99発、サプライに22発の命中弾を受けました。ミートキーナは連合軍側のレド、インパール、ディマプールの飛行場から距離4-5ヘクスしかなく、航続距離の短い連合軍戦闘機もsweepをすることができます。なので、日本側としては常時CAPを上げてミートキーナを守ることは得策ではないと思っています。飛行場の修理が終わってほとぼりの冷めた頃に、サプライズ的にCAPを上げたり、逆にレド、インパール、ディマプールへのsweepを実施する飛行場として使えれば充分かなと。
しかし、ビルマ北東部のミートキーナは少し意味合いが違います。ここは上記の印緬国境近くの連合軍側飛行場からの距離が8-9ヘクスあって、今の時期、ミートキーナをsweepできる連合軍戦闘機はP-38など少数の機種だけだからです。でも、サプライを中国に空輸する作戦にとって、ミートキーナと同じくラシオも邪魔な存在のはず。前日のミートキーナをひどく叩いた空襲があって、今日はこのラシオにsweepが来るんではないかと予想しました。そこで、2個戦隊合計76機の二式戦(Ki-44-IIa Tojo)をMagweからラシオに移動させ、100%CAPで迎撃してみようと考えたのです。
リプレイを見ていると、予想とは違ってsweepではなく、P-38F Lightning75機の護衛で4波95機の爆撃機がやってきました。このゲームの戦闘機の空戦では、sweep>CAP>護衛という関係があります。P-38F Lightningとはいえsweepではなく護衛で来るようなら与し易い、やったねと一瞬思ったのですが、なぜかCAPが一機も飛んでいません。CAPがいなければ連合軍爆撃機はしたい放題ですから、滑走路に43発、飛行場施設に99発、サプライに10発の命中弾がありました。しかも、二式戦が29機も地上で破壊されてしまったのです。パイロットの被害はKIA 2名、WIA2名でさすがに自軍の根拠地なのでMIAは0名。それでも2戦隊とも99あったMoraleが25と18にまで低下してしまいました。このMorale値では戦闘できる状態ではありませんから、ラングーンに移動して休養させることにしました。第一線の部隊も可能な限りMorale値 99をキープするよう心がけていますが、この二つの戦隊がそこまで回復するには1週間はかかりそうです。
今日のラシオの天候はLight cloudでCAP任務には支障なしのはず。また以前、移動直後の飛行隊は移動にかかった時間のせいで攻撃できないというエントリーで移動直後の飛行隊が任務を実行しない理由に時間不足があることを哨戒しましたが、今日のこの2戦隊ともMagweからラシオへ距離5ヘクスの移動ですから、攻撃的任務と違って移動先根拠地のCAPをするのに時間が足りなくてというはずはないと思います。それではいったいなぜだろうと思いながらラシオの戦隊をチェックしてみると、指示したはずのCAP 100%ではなく、ふたつとも護衛任務が指示されています。原因は司令官のうっかりだったのでした。史実でこんなことがあれば、更迭されちゃうんでしょうね、きっと。
今日は宗谷海峡周辺で、SS S-44がASW TFのSC Ch 16に、SS S-45がコンボイを護衛中のSC CHa-31に各一本ずつ魚雷を命中させ、二隻とも沈没してしまいました。駆潜艇が撃沈されたこと自体はとっても残念ですが、行き来の頻繁な貨物船の方には被害がなかったということは、二隻とも「良き羊飼いは羊のために命を捨てる」を実践してくれたと考えて納得することにします。
