昭和17年10月19日、百式重爆(Ki-49-IIa Helen) 91機がMagweからインパールの夜間爆撃に向かいました。Thunderstormsの夜で条件は悪かったのですが、珍しく91機がまとまって爆撃を行いました。Airbase hits 2、Airbase supply hits 1、Runway hits 2と少数の命中弾しか得ることができませんでしたが、地上でP-40K Warhawkを3機、P-40E Warhawkを1機破壊することができました。このところ中国戦線以外で連合軍機を地上で破壊したことがなかったので、幸先の良いスタートでした。
連合軍の方は66機の爆撃機が8波に分かれてMagweを五月雨的に夜間爆撃。Heavy cloudのせいか、こちらもAirbase hits 1、Runway hits 8と命中弾そのものは多くなく、一晩で修復完了してしまう程度の被害でしたが、地上でゼロ戦(A6M3b Zero)が3機破壊されてしまいました。また爆撃機はWellington IcとB-17E Fortressが各一機Ops lossになっただけなのに、CAPをしていた二式複戦(Ki-45 KAIa Nick)が6機損失になったのも地味に痛いところ。あと、Magweの隣りでマンダレーで夜間CAP(range1)をしている二式戦が迎撃に参加してくれない現象も続いています。これはなぜなんでしょうかね？レーダーによる探知から敵機来襲まで3-14分と余裕が余りないのは分かりますが、8波にも分かれて来たんですから後の方の爆撃機の迎撃はできてもおかしくないと思うんですけど。
昼になって、二式戦(Ki-44-IIa Tojo)が2波(42機と40機)に分かれてインパールをsweepしました。インパールには前日もsweepが飛んでいたので、今日は合計で100機(Hurricane IIc Trop 18機、P-38F Lightning 39機、P-39D Airacobra 23機、P-40E Warhawk 20機、P-40K Warhawk 27機)の戦闘機がCAPに上がっていました。参加機数がとても多く、延々と続くコンバット・アニメーションをすべて見る根気がありませんでしたが、早送りしたアニメの最後には2波とも二式戦がインパール飛行場上空を飛ぶシーンを見ることができました。被撃墜機と被弾や弾丸切れで帰還した機が参加機数に等しい時には、この飛行場上空を飛ぶシーンが見られません。なので、敵飛行場上空を勝ち誇って飛ぶシーンはsweep側の勝利を意味するものだと思い込んでいました。しかしTrackerで戦闘機の損失数を見ると、二式戦は31機(A2Aで28機、Ops 3機)だったのに対し、CAPは合計で27機(Hurricane IIc Trop 2機、P-38F Lightning 1機、P-39D Airacobra 9機、P-40E Warhawk 6機、P-40K Warhawk 9機)で、二式戦側の敗北です。

という見慣れない報告がオペレーショナルリポートにありましたが、これはOps lossではなくてA2A lossになるんでしょうね。二式戦31機は5-6日分の生産数です。またパイロットはKIA 12名、WIA 3名、MIA 10名でした。
前日の教訓から今日は高度30000フィートでsweepしてみました。敗北の主因は、各波の二式戦の数がCAPの数より少なかったためでしょうか。82機がまとまってsweepすれば違った結果だったかも知れませんが、出撃元がMagweとマンダレーの2飛行場だったので、2波に分かれたのはやむを得ないところ。単に連合軍の戦闘機が高性能になってきているので、二式戦がsweepしても勝ちきれない時期になってきているだけなのかもしれません。連合軍のCAPの戦闘機の中でP-38F Lightningの損失数が少なかったのは、やはり高性能な機種であることを反映しているような気がします。
前日に引き続き、マダンにサプライを送るTFが空襲されました。今日はマダン港でSBD-3 Dauntless 16機に急降下爆撃され、PB Yasushima MaruとPB Fuji Maru #3(各VP4、830トン)沈没しました。マダンにCAPやLRCAPを上げるわけにも行きません。一度でもそんなことをしたら、大量の護衛戦闘機をつけられて、かえってCAPの戦闘機を無駄にするだけになるでしょうから。サプライの送り先を変更できないか検討が必要なようです。ところで、コンバットリポートをみると、16000フィートで飛来した16機のSBD-3 Dauntlessのうち、3機は4000フィート、9機は2000フィートまで降下して1000ポンド爆弾を投下していますが、残り4機は10000フィートから投下しています。急降下爆撃で10000フィートまでしか降下しないこともあるんでしたっけ？
といった感じで、ビルマ、ニューギニアでは昨日と同じような応酬(空戦スコア的には昨日より悪い)が続いた一日でした。さらに今日は海面下でも悲報がありました。エスピリッツサント近海でパトロールしていたRO-68(VP 6、988トン)がASW TFにつかまりました。DMS Southardの放った爆雷が2発命中して沈没してしまいました。
