昭和17年10月26日、Magweとその周辺に配備してある百式重爆(Ki-49-IIa Helen)45機が5波に分かれてインパールを夜間爆撃しました。Hurricane IIc TropがCAPに上がっていたので、護衛のついていない爆撃機の一部は逃走したと表示され、投弾したのは37機だけでした。37機の高度12000フィートからの爆撃でもそれなりの戦果がありそうなものですが、CAPに邪魔されるのか、Flakを避けるためなのか、Airbase hits 1、Runway hits 1と地上でP-40K Warhawkを1機破壊できただけでした。しっかり防御されている連合軍飛行場に対して、日本の夜間爆撃はほとんど効果がありません。昼間ならもっと命中弾があるかも知れませんが、それも投弾にまで至ればの話。CAPがしっかりしている飛行場を昼間攻撃するのはまあ無理ですね。
その後、連合軍の潜水艦が敷設したラングーン入港部の機雷を掃海していたAMc Tatibana Maru(VP 3、830トン)が触雷して沈没してしまいました。AMcが触雷沈没とはね。DMSの方でなかった点に小さな幸せを見つけるくらいしか、心の平安を保つ手段がないっていう感じです。昨日と今日で合計27個の機雷を掃海し、触雷した艦船が合計5隻ですから、連合軍の機雷の効率には脱帽です。
午前中、インパールからMagweを28機のHurricane IIc Tropと60機のP-40K Warhawkが5波に分かれてsweep。そしてディマプールからマンダレーを23機のP-39D Airacobraがsweep。magweとマンダレーは距離2ヘクスで、それぞれの飛行場配備機が他方にもCAPを行えるようなrangeを指示してあります。今日の合計6波111機のsweepは15機のゼロ戦(A6M3b Zero)と63機の二式戦(Ki-44-IIa Tojo)が迎撃しました。午後にもA2Aがあったので正確スコアではありませんが、この午前の戦いに参加した戦闘機の被撃墜機数は16対53、3倍以上の優勢なスコアでした。
午後、カルカッタから24機のP-38F Lightningの護衛で、B-17E Fortress 25機、B-24D Liberator 31機、B-25C Mitchell 24機がMagwe飛行場爆撃にやってきました。8機のゼロ戦(A6M3b Zero)と52機の二式戦(Ki-44-IIa Tojo)が迎撃したと報告されていますが、午前中の連合軍のsweepとの激戦による故障やら疲労やらで、実際にこの午後の空襲で会敵できた機数はもっと少なかったものと思われます。それでもP-38F Lightningを6機も撃墜したのですから、CAPはよく働いてくれたと思います。しかし爆撃を防ぐことはできず、80機の爆撃機が7000フィートから投弾した654個の500ポンド爆弾のうち、Airbase hits 77、Airbase supply hits 7、Runway hits 102個が命中。おそらく飛行場施設被害77、滑走路被害100になったんだろうと思いますが、爆撃後にMagweにいるengineer 215分隊とengineer vehicle 3輛が修復に活躍して、今日の情報画面では滑走路被害81となっていました。
飛行場自体の被害も大きなものですが、駐機していた飛行機の被害も甚大です。百式重爆が45機、二式戦が29機ゼロ戦が3機、百式司偵が3機、合計で80機が地上で破壊されてしまいました。我が国の航行機工業の規模からいうと、百式重爆は9日分、二式戦は4－5日分の生産量にあたります。あれこれあわせて今日一日で103機の損失を記録しましたが、自軍の飛行場とその上空での戦いが中心だったためか、パイロットの死傷者数はKIA 10名、WIA 3名と控えめでした。
マダンでFasttransport TFのPBがさんざん空襲で沈められた経験に鑑み、ニューギニア東部へのサプライ輸送先を2ヘクス北西のHansa Bayに変更してみました。しかしそれでもブナから12機のBeaufighter Icが飛来しました。高度100フィートから投弾される250ポンド爆弾は一発もはずれず、PB Yokae MaruとPB Kaimyo Maru(ともにVP 4、830トン)の2隻とも沈没してしまいました。昭和17年も10月末となると史実同様に苦戦になりますね。
