昭和17年10月11日、樺太の南端、中知床半島の東側でASW TFのSC Ch 34がSS S-44に雷撃され、沈没しました。すかさず僚艦のSC Ch 28がType 95 Mod-2 DCで反撃して、hits 8と報告されています。アニメーションをみていると、船殻に大きなダメージを与えた命中が3回あり、司令室に浸水とか内部で爆発などという文もみられたので、てっきり沈没したものと思ったのですが、沈没音は聞かれませんでした。でも、Sunk Ship Listにはしっかり載せられています。対潜戦で水上艦と潜水艦の両方が沈没した場合に聞かれる沈没音は水上艦のものだけで、潜水艦の沈没音は省かれてしまう仕様かもしれないなと感じました。
その後、稚内でリソースを降ろして豊原に戻るコンボイのxAKL Ryuun MaruがS-42に雷撃されて沈没。そして同じコンボイのxAKL Tensyo MaruがS-45に雷撃されて沈没しました。ともに2050トン、VP 3の小さなMiyati Cargo級xAKLですから、沈んでもそれほど惜しいわけではありませんが、この豊原・稚内航路では9日にSCが2隻、今日11日はSC 1隻とxAKL 2隻が沈められているんですよね。S-44が2隻、S-45が2隻、S-42が1隻といずれもS級潜水艦の戦果でした。日本側としては、S級を1隻沈めても5隻沈没しては、大損な取引です。もちろん空からもASWをしているのですが、沈められているのは夜ばかりですから、困ったものです。
第二次世界大戦の太平洋戦線でのアメリカ潜水艦の活動をまとめたSilent Victoryという本を読んだことがあります。その中で描かれていたS級潜水艦は、旧式の潜水艦で故障も少なくない、新しい潜水艦が就役するにつれどんどん後方(潜水艦学校など)にまわされっていった、ハワイやフリーマントルといったアメリカ軍の潜水艦基地から遠い日本本土近海での活動なんて考えられない、といった感じのものでした。しかしこのゲームでは、より新しいクラスの装備している魚雷の不発率が1942年いっぱいは80%に設定されていることもあって、大活躍です。
WitP AEもシミュレーションゲームですから、詳細なデータと多数の兵装・艦種・機種を取り揃えていることがアピールポイントの一つなんだろうと思います。でもそんな風に多数のアイテムを用意しても、多数だというだけでは、シミュレーションに成功しているとはいえないと感じます。プレイヤーが多くの機種の中から日本陸軍の戦闘機の生産を二式戦に集中させてしまう傾向や、このS級潜水艦の活躍は、うまく史実を反映させることができていない証拠のような気がします。
