昭和17年10月27日、前日に引き続いてビルマのMagweに空襲がありました。第一陣はチッタゴンから16機のHurricane I Tropが高度24000フィートでsweep。高度10000フィートでCAPしていた二式戦(Ki-44-IIa Tojo)25機が迎撃しました。その後、カルカッタから35機のP-38F Lightningの護衛で、Liberator II 4機、B-17E Fortress 19機、B-24D Liberator 21機、B-25C Mitchell 11機が高度7000フィートで来襲。迎撃した二式戦は20機でAirbase hits 19、Airbase supply hits 1、Runway hits 40の被害を受けました。
Magweの飛行場は前日の爆撃で使用不能な状態ですから、東隣のヘクスのメイクテイラとそのもうひとつ東南のTaung Gyi配備の二式戦がCAPをつとめました。CAPを任せることのできる部隊数が前日より減ってしまったので迎撃した機数も少なかったのですが、味方根拠地の上空ですし、来襲した数も前日より少なくなっていたので、優勢に戦えたようです。Trackerをみると、二式戦の損失4機(A2Aで3機、Ops loss 1機)に対して、Hurricane I Tropは16機のうち13機(A2Aで11機、Ops loss 2機)、P-38F Lightningは35機のうち6機(A2Aで3機、Ops loss 3機)となっていました。このゲームの戦闘機対戦闘機の空戦では、sweep>CAP、高いところにいる方が有利というのが定説です。しかし、今日の二式戦対Hurricane I Tropのスコアを見ると、高所の有利とsweepの有利があっても、旧式化した機種ではだめということがよくわかります。Hurricane I Tropは昭和17年1月からの機種で最高速度毎時282マイル。それに対して二式戦(Ki-44-IIa Tojo)は昭和17年9月からの機種で最高時速376マイルですから、最高速度の差が効いているんだろうと思います。
連合軍の爆撃機が2日続けてMagweにやってきたのは、完全に破壊するためか、それとも今日もまだ日本側にCAPを上げる余力があるか探るためなんでしょうか。まあいずれにせよ、今日の爆撃もシビアでした。飛行機はすべて後方に避難させたので地上破壊機は0でしたが、飛行場施設被害は100、滑走路被害は81となりました。きっと爆撃直後は滑走路被害100で、その後の工兵の修復で81に回復したのでしょう。81なのは前日の数値と同じですから、Magweに現在駐屯している工兵が一日に19ずつ修復できることも確認できました。
一日に19修復できても、施設と滑走路ともに完全に回復させるには11日もかかります。連合軍としては完全に破壊しなくとも、数日に一回爆撃すれば使用不能に追い込めるわけです。もっともMagweに加えて、Magwe隣接するマンダレー、メイクテイラ、Taung Gyi飛行場すべてを使用不能にすることは難しいでしょうが、爆撃を完全に阻むことはできません。爆弾を投下されてしまえば地上での破壊機がでますから、爆撃機をこれらの飛行場で運用することはかなり難しくなりました。HRで昭和17年12月いっぱいは戦略爆撃を禁止しているのでまだMagweの油田は安泰ですが、昭和18年の元旦にはMagwe油田全壊を覚悟しなければなりません。
ビルマを取り巻く状況はこんな感じで、印緬国境を越えての連合軍地上部隊の侵攻にどう対処すべきかと悩む段階に入ったようです。陸軍の戦闘機部隊が健闘しているので、連合軍側も楽な戦いだとまでは感じていないでしょうが。Magweに3個師団いるのですがいずれは爆撃で戦闘不能にされそうなので、ジャングルのヘクスに移動させようかと思います。
