昭和17年7月21日も多難な一日となりました。マニラから香港へLCUを運ぶ船団がSS Pollackに襲撃され、AMC Akagi Maruに魚雷が一本命中しました。沈没音はなくほっとしたのですが、昼のフェーズにもう一度SS Pollackに雷撃され、もう一本命中した魚雷により沈没してしまいました。AMC Akagi Maruは4th Tank Regimentを載せていました。夜間の被雷後すぐに沈没したわけではなく、船団のほかの商船のスペースに余裕がなかったわけでもないのに、救助活動が行われた報告はありませんでした。結果的に4th Tank Regimentはまるまる海没。やはり複数の船にわけて乗せるよういしないといけませんね。
その後対馬海峡でxAK Aden Maru(Aden Cargo級xAKのネームシップですね)がSS Pompanoに雷撃され、沈没しました。南方や中国からの資源は、上海、大連、釜山から福岡に輸送するようにしています。いまのところ連合軍潜水艦は深海ヘクスを選んで待ち伏せしているので、 対馬海峡のところは必ず浅海ヘクスである対馬のヘクスを通過するようway pointを設定しています。ところがこのxAK Aden Maruの船団は対馬ヘクスの西隣の深海ヘクスを通過していました。way pointを設定しないとここを通過する仕様です。一昨日と昨日のターンは珊瑚海の方に気を取られて、うっかり設定し忘れてしまったようです。
昨日の戦いで大きなダメージを受けたCV蒼龍はフルスピードで7ヘクス北上し、珊瑚海の中央まで達していました。しかし連合軍空母も追撃に北上し、距離7ヘクス。午前に25機のSBD-3 Dauntlessの攻撃を受け、6発の1000ポンド爆弾が命中しました。まだ浮いてはいましたが、さすがに昨日のダメージの程度を考えると生還は望めないと感じました。そして午後にも14機のSBD-3 Dauntlessが来襲し、2発の爆弾が命中し沈没しました。エスコートしていたDD初月にも午前午後で3発の1000ポンド爆弾が命中したので、こちらも生還は難しいと思われます。そして、昨日の戦闘でとても大きなダメージを受けて、僚艦といっしょに北上することができなかったDD夕霧にも11機のSBD-3 Dauntlessの爆撃があり、2発の爆弾命中で沈没しました。
追撃して来た連合軍空母はレキシントン、ホーネット、サラトガ、ワスプ、イラストリアスの5隻のようです。ルンガから距離12ヘクスまで接近して来ていたので、ルンガの一式陸攻2部隊がゼロ戦の護衛で出撃しました。しかし”G4M1 Betty unable to locate target due to range or weather”と報告され、戦果なく帰還することになりました。今日は艦船を4隻も撃沈されたのですが、なんといっても本日一番のがっかりはこれですね。
機動部隊の方もフルスピードを指示してあり、12ヘクスも北上していたので、前日より連合軍空母から離れることができました。8ヘクスの距離なので、空母艦載機の攻撃を受けることはありませんでした。昨日の時点で連合軍の追撃は予想していました、きっと水上戦闘TFで来るだろう、水上戦闘TFなら航空攻撃で少しでも削りたいと考えて、機動部隊の飛行隊の攻撃設定はそのままにしてありました。予想と違って追撃して来たのは空母でしたが、CV飛龍の指揮官の判断で7機の九七艦攻が4機のゼロ戦の護衛で攻撃に出発しました。 距離8ヘクスからの攻撃はいちおうアウトレンジなのですが、少数機で出撃しても意味がありません。89機もCAPに上がっていて、攻撃にも至らず全滅に近い被害を出してしまいました。AI指揮官の判断にイライラさせられる仕様は、プレイヤーが軍の最高司令官を演ずるシミュレーションゲームとしては、よくできていると評価すべきところなんでしょうね。
機動部隊に空母艦載機の攻撃はありませんでしたが、オーストラリアからB-17E FortressとB-24D Liberatorが五月雨的に来襲。四発爆撃機の低高度からの爆撃はHRで禁止しているので、高度7000フィートからの爆撃でしたが、このくらいの高度だとなかなか水平爆撃は命中せず、今日もアンラッキーヒットはありませんでした。
