昭和17年7月20日は、夜のフェーズでシンガポールの東隣のヘクスでxAK Tazima MaruがSS O20に雷撃される場面から始まりました。魚雷が一本命中し、アニメーション終了後まもなく沈没してしまいました。空船ではありましたが、Lima Cargo級という日本側では大きめな貨物船(6475トン、VP 13)ですし、シンガポールまで1ヘクスもちこたえることができれば助かったはずなので残念です。
きのう想像していた通り連合軍は空母TFをニューカレドニア島の西に進出させました。連合軍側は合計6つのTFを隣接する二つのヘクスに3つずつ配置しています。おそらく1ヘクス離れてフォローさせているのでしょう。この二つのヘクスの両方に空母TFが存在していて、互いのCAPが支援できるようにしてありました。これに対して、前々日・前日の戦闘で傷ついた艦船を支援するため珊瑚海を南下した機動部隊との間で、空母どうしの航空戦が戦われました。表に示した通り、日本側からは午前と午後の2波、連合軍からは午前3波と午後4波の攻撃がありました。
午前の連合軍の攻撃は、まず戦闘33機の護衛で65機のSBD-3 Dauntlessと15機のTBF-1 Avenger。CAPのゼロ戦は21機と少なく、それなりの数を撃墜しましたが、突破する機体も少なくありません。BB比叡に魚雷が一本命中。CV蒼龍と瑞鶴、CA筑摩に1000ポンド爆弾が1発ずつ命中しました。蒼龍への爆弾はあたりどころがかなり悪かったようで、弾薬の誘爆が報告されました。このあと、きのう大きなダメージを受けていたCL能代に15機のTBF-1 Avengerが殺到し、魚雷一本命中で沈没しました。昨日自沈させなかったのは少しでも連合軍空母機の攻撃を吸収してほしかったからですが、みごとその役目を果たしてくれました。黙祷。そして、午前第2波の連合軍ははぐれたTBF-1 Avengerが2機だけで、日本側には被害がなし。午前の第3波は戦闘機30機の護衛で45機のSBD-3 Dauntless。CAPのゼロ戦は16機に減っていて、食い止めきれません。第一波の攻撃で大きなダメージを受けて回避行動もとりにくくなっていたと思われるCV蒼龍に爆弾が2発命中し、BB比叡にも爆弾が一発命中しました。
午後の日本側は11機の九七艦攻と18機の九九艦爆を10機のゼロ戦が護衛して攻撃しましたが、77機のCAPに阻まれ、爆弾や魚雷の投下行動に移れませんでした。
午後の連合軍側第一波は31機の戦闘機の護衛で26機のSBD-3 Dauntlessと12機のTBF-1 Avengerでしたが、護衛のゼロ戦は7機とさらに減っていて、CV瑞鶴に爆弾一発、BB比叡に魚雷が一発名中。その後第二から第四波は戦闘機の護衛なしで雷撃機、急降下爆撃機だけがやってきましたが、CAPのゼロ戦も4→2→1機と減っていて、CV翔鶴に魚雷一本、CV瑞鶴に爆弾2発、BB比叡に魚雷一本と爆弾一発の命中を許してしまいました。
今日の戦いをまとめると、CV Formidableを撃沈し、米軍空母のうちのヨークタウンとエンタープライズに痛撃を与えることができました。おそらくエンタープライズは大破でしょうが、ニューカレドニア島のKoumacまでの距離が3ヘクスしかないことと、米軍のダメコンを考えると、沈没することはないでしょう。対する日本側はCV蒼龍がSys 61, Flt 32, Eng, 30, Fire 44で、日本側のダメコン的に火災の消火が難しそうな数値なのと、日本側の制空権までの距離がかなりあるので、生還はまあ無理だろうと思われます。無傷のCV飛龍と損傷艦ではあってもCV翔鶴・瑞鶴とBB比叡だけはなんとか本土まで連れてかえりたいものです。昨日まで心配していたBB金剛、CA鳥海は遁走に成功しました。
ポートモレスビーを奪還されたときもそうでしたが、戦力の集中という原則に忠実な相手の方の姿勢には目をみはらざるをえません。コンバットリポートには迎撃にあたった戦闘機の飛行隊の名称が載せられているので、まとめてみると表の通りです。今日、日本側が攻撃する機会をもてた空母以外にも、その南隣のヘクスにサラトガ、ホーネット、ワスプがいることは確実でしょう。海兵隊の戦闘機飛行隊も空母に搭載されている可能性がありますから、もう1－2隻いるのかもしれません。最低でも8隻の空母が相互にCAPで支援しあえるように隣どうしヘクスに位置していたことには本当に脱帽です。
一方、日本側は今回の決戦のきっかけが、正体不明のTFを狙ったものだったこともあって、ばらばらでした。機動部隊を蒼龍・飛龍・翔鶴・瑞鶴の4隻で編成したのは、隼鷹など足の遅い空母を組み込むと、水上戦闘TFに遅れてしまうことを危惧したからです。実際には30ノット以上で編成した機動部隊も、水上戦闘TFよりかなり後方を航海する羽目になったので、使える空母は全部出撃させるべきだったと反省しています。それでも、空母4隻対8隻の対決で、今日のところはそれほど遜色のない戦果を挙げることができたのは、
- この時期の連合軍空母からの攻撃にはコーディネーションペナルティが厳しい
- BB比叡が被害担当艦の役割をはたしてくれた
- 日本側のパイロットの方が少し優秀なのかも
の3点でしょうか。日本側は午前午後ともに1波にまとまって攻撃できました(でも午後はしょぼくてCAPに粉砕されましたが)。しかし連合軍側は各3波・4波と五月雨式に攻撃することになってしまいました。もしこれが一つにまとまってやってきていたら、この程度の被害では済まなかったでしょう。また日本側には空母に随伴できる金剛級戦艦があって機動部隊の中に含めてありました(本当なら2隻入れるべきですね)が、連合軍側の空母TFにはCAとCLAAが入っていただけなので、艦載機の攻撃をひきつける囮としては劣っていたのでしょう。また、もうひとつ考えられることとして、日本側戦闘機の使い方です。私はCAP 30%、残りはEscortにふりむける設定にしてありました。連合軍空母のCAPはとても強力でしたから、70%をEscortに振り向けても多数が撃墜されることは避けられませんでした。それでも、爆撃・雷撃のチャンスをものにした機体も少なくなかったわけですから、空母の劣勢な側の設定としては悪くなかったと思います。前日の戦闘でゼロ戦をかなり失っていたこと不利でしたが、連合軍の空母艦載戦闘機も同じように減っていましたからね。
今日の損失機数はこんな感じです。日本側は100機強、連合軍側も80機以上の損失。空母戦は飛行機の被害が馬鹿になりませんね。注目すべき点として、連合軍の急降下爆撃機・雷撃機のFlakによる損失機数が日本側とそれほど違わないこと。機動部隊の直援には秋月級駆逐艦が5隻含まれていましたが、これがそれなりに役立ってくれたのでしょう。
現時点で日本側の健在な空母は今日の戦闘で無事だった飛龍、トラックにいる隼鷹と飛鷹とCVL日進、インド洋にいるCVL祥鳳と瑞鳳、横須賀でアップグレード中の赤城と加賀、スラバヤでアップグレード中のCVL龍驤と、CVEが2隻。連合軍側が空母を集中して使用することが明らかになったので、こちらも集中して使えるようにしていきたいと思います。とりあえずは今日の損傷艦をなんとか生還させることに集中ですが、その次はどうするか。今日ダメージを受けたエンタープライズ、ヨークタウン、イラストリアスは修理が必要なはずです。シドニーの修理工廠は規模31なので、これからの戦いを考えると、空母の修理にはあてたくないでしょう。パールハーバーか、もしかすると西海岸まで回航することを考えるのではないでしょうか。もしその途中を襲うことができれば最高なんですけどね。
